Finally started up my GC project again
« on: August 06, 2006 - 01:21:03 PM »
Well its been sitting more than a year because of countless other projects on my ranch, but I started it up again and am going to finish it this time, atleast the paint. She will be reassembled this winter and I know :useless:
I'll get some pics today.
Dang I hate sandblasting,I've been doing the fenders this weekend along with many distractions as usual, hopefully they will be in primer by the end of the day.It feels good to get started again instead of just looking at her in my shop.

I've always enjoyed sandblasting. Off to the blasters with rusty old junk, back a short time later with parts ready for primer. Something satisfying there.... :2cents:

I have about 12 hours into the fenders, they were stripped at one time by the previous owner so i had to blast off all the surface rust.I blasted inside and out, then primered with Valspar 2k,primer,sealer,filler,DTM all in one, nice stuff.Yes I took my time to make sure I got every spot.I have fun doing it at a leasurly pace so it doesnt burn me out.

"Thats the easy way, lol.I'm talking about doing it yourself."

I was too. I take my parts to a place that rents professional gear, breathing apparatus, and has the various mixes available for any size the job. You don't find that level of gear for sale at the local Pep Boys! The basic mix is housed in silos 4 stories high that look like rockets from the 50"s crashed into the ground. Always feels like a picnic on the moon. Wouldn't want my place knee deep in used sand in any case!

"I would never have anyone sandblast my stuff, heard too many horror stories about blasting thru metal."

I've heard stories too, usually devoid of professionals. But that isn't why I do it myself. I'm just a control freak with an unrealisticly high expectation level, plus it's fun. The product mix used, the equipment capabilities and a basic understanding of the relationship between distance to production are all you need to know for a good result. It's not rocket science, and anyone who blows a hole in an old car part or streaches a panel is just not aware of how to use the gear. Most professionals, and some enthusiasts, are.

We are on the same page, part of the problem with shops warping panels and blowing holes in them is the equipment they use.Its commercial compressors and sand blasters that move ALOT of material at high pressures to get the job done fast, sometimes ignoring the damage that could cause. You mix a young inexperienced kid and that equipment and your asking for disaster.I use a lower pressure setting(40-60psi) with kid gloves on.I feel each panel along the way to make sure its not getting eccessively hot.I too am a control freak when it comes to that, afterall i want to keep all my original sheet metal(except the trunk floor since i had to replace it).I wish i had one of those blasting facility's around me.What is it called?are they a chain of shops?
thanks
