Should I grab this engine ?
« on: August 07, 2006 - 10:29:25 PM »
Should I grab this '74  "U" code 440 that has been sitting outside for at least 10 years. Don't know condition when parked,  was told that it was froze up. Should I grab for spare or trading purposes and whats the most I should offer? :clueless: Has tranny also

I think I hear Elwood saying, "It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks."  :naughty:

If you have the room, tell him you will haul the car off if he gives it to you, then pull engine/trans and take a sawzall to the car and recycle,i have done that many times before, you would probably get a few hundred bucks from the scrap yard for the steel.Or you could make a hemi-fury-4door-clone,lol,but i dont think it will ever be worth anything

It's a little  :scared: But if the price is right, I'd gamble. If your close enough, ask if you can pull a head. Moparnut has a good idea also-- all he can say is no

4 months ago I bought a 69 d100 pickup for 500 bucks that had a 440hp with 906 heads and it ran pretty good, got it home and it was standard bore after i pulled the heads to check.I kept the engine and HD727 and sold the rest of the truck for 100 bucks to a kid that needed the frame,so i didnt even have to cut up the truck

Yea I'm going to see how low this guy will go. I know sombody that wants the dash for $100 & maybe some other parts plus I think the owner wants it out of his yard, I just wish I had a trailer. :'(  What do you have to check after you pull the heads, Measure inside the bore with a micrometer?

Take a wire brush and a can of brakeclean to remove the carbon buildup so you can see the oversize numbers on the pistons

Check out my post in c&c galore I got a guy who wants to give me a rebuilt engine for the car in the drive with the engine I just pulled

If you need a motor it may be worthwhile.  The Dana can be cut down for a car.  You won't have a pinion snubber mount on it though.
