Extreme Makeover Home Ed. - Spectator's view
« on: August 13, 2006 - 02:17:57 PM »
The TV show "Extreme Makeover" is doing a house about 40 miles from me so my wife and my daughter wanted to go visit it today. The lady getting the makeover is a friend of someone at our church so there's a little added interest in this one. Any way, I thought maybe some of you might like to see what it was like "around" the actual site.  It was very interesting, we were bussed into the site from about 3 miles away. and a spectator area was set up right at the edge of the site and bleachers were set up so you could sit there and watch. They were actually using about 10 acres around the site for equipment and all. They were very organized and quite friendly despite all the stuff that was going on.  Unfortunatly Ty was not at the site today.  The project started on Wednesday August 2nd and the reveal is tomorrow, August 14th.  The home was pretty much finished on Wednesday the 9th and they've been working on the landscape and interior deco for the last few days.  We were pretty impressed.

Yeah, it's a real sad story that I'll leave for the airing of the show but that little house was saturated with black mold. I'll leave it at that for now.  Watch the airing in September.  These shows often make my wife and I a little teary eyed.

Don't think I've ever watched that show and not gotten a little teary eyed myself.  Usually, after watching the sad part (at the beginning of the show), I'll turn to my wife and say, "Why do you make me watch this stuff?"  She knows I'd rather watch stuff get blown up or laugh my butt off...

Pixie watches it all the time.  I just can't....too much of a roller coaster of emotions.  The last 10 minutes are great though!

It's a great show and the people getting the new homes are deserving. We try and catch it each week, makes you feel good about people willing to help others with their time, ability, and efforts. The one thing that I usually ask myself is if these people who get the new home have not been able to rectify their situation at least in part how are they going to be able to financially care for the up keep, added utility cost (due to square footage space), and additional taxes because of the obvious greater value on the properties? I wonder if they will ever have a series of follow up stories on previous chosen families and how they have gotten along?  As I said, great show, but think it would be better presented with less theatrics involved. And also quite honestly there is a lot of good materials and merchindise just being thrown away and destroyed in the process of this makeover, a lot of people could feel themselves blessed getting some of the things/materials being hauled to the landfill.
