Best valve cover gaskets for a 440?
« on: August 13, 2006 - 03:10:49 PM »
Is the elastomer-impregnated cork type the best way to go?

Are they all created about equal?

Thanks.

That's the way I went. They all are pretty much the same at the upper end. I wouldn't settle for plain old cork though. To be honest, I used a little RTV around the block before I put on the gasket and valve covers. Just call it extra insurance if the block isn't nice and smooth.

So... there's not much difference between:

Rubber
Rubber coated metal

Looks like Mopar sells both kinds.

Is the mteal-cored version for higher compression motors?

Currently I have tall Moroso covers but I'm going to ditch those for some factory chrysler 440 covers. (period correct for 70-71)

the steel covers are far easier to seal the the steel will fit itself to the non - flat contour of the head , I liek the Fel Pro rubber for the factory covers

Has anyone tried the Felpro high heat ones? My cork one started leaking ( right side of coarse) so I put a high heat one on and it leaked even worse at first, now it's still leaks a little and I HATE oil leaks. is there a better gasket or do you just learn to live with fried leaky gaskets?

I changed mine twice without success....
had the pros do it once without success...they sealed it on the second try.
Turns out the head casting was rough and not straight.

Hope I don't have to remove them for a long time !!

I agree: Oil leaks suck  :villagers:

virtually ever valve cover rail I have checked on any head has  not been level which is why the factory used steel cover that flex no cast alum ones
