You guys are terrific.  Sorry I didn't post pics, but I didn't have any atm.  Also, I didn't have the full vin.  I don't know for sure about purchasing the car.  I'm definately considering it.

Where do you get the codes?

As you can see, online decoders have errors.

M88 is the rear tail panel molding.

The M88 seems to change according to year.  I do not know what year the quarter panel tape treatment is for or what car it is for.

Well first of all, thanks again for the info on the tags.  The car was on Ebay and I ended up not bidding.    I'll get one.  It's just a matter of time.

Here is the car for those who wanted to see pics.

Barry,

Wouldn't all BS23 Cuda's have the rear tail panel molding? If so why is is listed as an option on the fender tag.  Just curious as I have M88 on my fender tag also...a 71 cuda

I am confused...lol

Some standard items were always coded, try and find any E-Body hard top that does not code M21 as an example.

This is one of the reasons that I have very little respect for online decoders, very few are make, model and year specific, so most of them open themselves up for errors and confusion for the users. Online decoders also will let you enter codes from a fake tag and decode it without letting you know it is a fake tag.

Some standard items were coded certain times of the year and not others, it is one of the things I am always on the lookout for and some trends are developing but research continues.

T/Ake care,
Barry

The codes on the fender tag are not necessarily options; they tell the assemblers where to drill (or not drill) the holes, or what does (or doesn't) get painted.  Example: Stripes are coded because; 'V5*' says drill for vinyl side moulding, 'V6*' says don't drill & add stripe decal, 'V9*' says don't drill & paint bumblebee stripe.  Certain mouldings need holes drilled for the required clips whether optional or not.  At least this is what a respected restorer told me...

The codes on the tags are sales codes, also reffered to as options. Based of the options, it let the line workers know what had to be done to the body in preperation for those options to be fitted to the car. While most of us refer to them as fender tags, Chrylser called it a "body information plate", they show major items for how the car is to be prepared, like paint color, vinyl top color, monotone or two tone paint, interior color and style, and so on. The sales codes on the tags do also include items where holes would be needed in the body for any particular option to the body.
