6.1 or 6.4 hemi?
« on: August 15, 2006 - 05:07:57 PM »
Does anyone have any updates on the rumored 6.4L crate hemi? Availability if ever?

Can you purchase a new 6.1L Hemi? I see some shop advertising new 6.1 Hemis.

Where are the shops such as http://www.pfcenterprises.com/ or XV Motorsports or the other conversion shops sourcing there new 6.1 Hemis? Do they have a special aftermarket method of purchasing directly from Mopar or are they available over the counter for anyone?

Thanks for any input.
Wes

Hey Welcome aboard here.

I have never even heard of a 6.4 Hemi.  So you are way beyond my learning curve.  I know you can get a 5.7 Hemi after-market, I don't know about the 6.1 yet.  :clueless:

If you mean the "new" 392 based on the 6.1 then yes, I have some news. The big difference is the crank which is a custom forged unit made for Mopar to experiment with (by some high end aftermarket crank vendor, I forget who). Anyway, the problem is that it was a custom crank and that accoding to the head guy at Mopar performance production is VERY slow to come........ and they still need more cranks at Mopar for experimental reasons. So, accordingly, when and IF the 6.4L/392ci version is signed off on and released to the public, you can bet it will be a while, especially as a crate motor, most likely a few years out or more.

Thanks for the info,
Yes the 392 is the 6.4 in question.
So, does anyone know where to get 6.1L hemis new from the factory?

Yeah, that would be great too.
Why is it that ma mopar can't get on the bandwagon to support their engine line up like the other big manufacturers. The Chevy and Ford guys do have it made in this regards. Cobra motor? No problem.....Vette motor? No problem......

Hopefully they'll come around on this soon.

Correct me if I'm wrong (which is very possible), but isn't the 5.7L Hemi more of a purpose built engine meaning it is engineered for only a certain horsepower and application such as a normal car/truck where as the 6.1L SRT has heavier duty and stronger internals much the same as a six pack engine did in the 70s?

Thanks

6.1 is a different motor than 5.7 in a few ways:
- Forged vs cast crank
- Heads
- Oil squirters in block to cool pistons

Can't recall on rods/pistons.

We're doing quite a few long and short blocks for people on both platforms as many are cratering them w/ forced induction or nitrous

Others are starting to beef up the bottom ends from the outset - rods/pistons/Head and main studs.
The 5.7's don't like RPM (in stock trim) and ring lands are very close to top of the pistons (in stock trim) so any detonation and they go away quick.

We don't run stock internals on anything we build.
