Other than a Hemi, what is the best crate motor that gives you the best bang for the buck?

The Ford Motorsport 380 horse 347...

I wouldnt buy a Mopar crate. If I was forced at gunpoint, the 360 versions have the best "no issues" ratio. The Hemis are the worst. But for the same money, a good shop can build a better engine.

A friend was relating his experince with the Hemi , warmed up to 180* picked up a miss , pulled the valve cover & a valve was stuck open pulled the head & 2 valve seats dropped out of the heads , contacted Mopar for warranty told GFY
when they went to repair the head they heated it to 200* & the rest of the seats dropped out

well, the ones I've head about first hand (I know/knew the owners)... Noises traced to: rod bolts not torqued, rods in backwards, main cap missing main bolt (how the heck???). These next ones were problems found after some run time..minutes, or a few miles: lifter noises, smoking due to rings with gaps lined up, guides too lose (same motor, had 2 valves too tight...must average out), leaking intake gaskets. In one case, he got one, it was bad out of the crate (you could hear a rod banging around when turning it with the starter), the bolts were never tightened, and the bearing was ratting around in the end of the rod. So, MP warranteed it. The second one ran for 3 mintues before the oil pressure went away, and it was shut down and returned without investigation. #3 was gotten, installed, and leaked out the rear main, and ended up having a ton of endplay. That one was sent to a hemi specialist, rebuilt by him, and has been running well for 3 years. Considering I only know about 6 guys that bought them over the course of 7 years. Of those 6, 4 had problems of some sort, requiring parts and labor to repair. they have a 33% GOOD record by my first hand experience. And I read about a lot of others. Not making the power they should, poor running, smoking, major leaking. Of the ones I'm personally saw, MP replaced the early one, and supplied parts only (no monetary reimbursment) for shops or owners to fix the others. For $10K or more, as an assembly, they flat out suck. They are a great way to get your hands on a new block and parts tho. I would still buy one. But the whole thing would come apart before it was ever installed and I'd go thru every inch of it.

I've heard of rear seals being installed backwards from the mfg but this was some time ago.  If you look at the cost of buying a crate motor, disassembling and checking it out and reassembling it with new gaskets, etc, I wonder if having one built locally is any more expensive.  The advantage of getting one built is that you can chose which cam, intake, etc you want.

There is a big back order now on the Hemi's because of the problems. Who knows when they'll get them out again.

Aw no.... what's wrong with it?  I've heard a few people rave about the 360 crates... do you think you just got a bad apple?
