340 block based 418
« on: August 17, 2006 - 01:30:37 PM »
This is one for the street crowd. 418 cu inch
'73 340 block .040 over
MP cast 4" crank, 340 mains
Eagle H beam rods, 6.123 long
Ross forged dished pistons
Edelbrock RPM heads, mild port cleanup, gasket match
MP roller rockers, 1.5 ratio
MP dist.
1 5/8 headers
Edelbrock Performer intake (not rpm...)
Holley 3310
Shortblock just basic good machining. ARP main studs, line bore, plate honed, sq decked, etc. Internally balanced, block notched for rod bolt clearance (needed on every rod type I know of..), block deburred. Assembled at a true 10.8:1. Runs a Solid cam from Scott Brown, roughly .530 lift, 229° @ .050. (small cam...)
Chassis dyno results were 378hp @ 5500, 409tq @ 3100.
Correcting that's 446hp, 482tq at the flywheel.
It runs on 92 pump fuel, idles at 800rpm, and pulls 13" of vaccum in drive, and never gets hotter than 185 with a 22" brass 3 core radiator.
The long block could be duplicated for $5900

Very interesting.  This combo is very similar to mine except that I have a hydraulic roller cam with the same duration but more lift and the Eddy rpm manifold.  I have the Eddy magnum heads, I beam rods and forged crank although these won't change the engine output figures! Unfortunately I have not had it dyno'd.  Compression, vacuum, etc is about the same too.  Hughes Engines estimated 460 HP+ based on this combo with the hydraulic roller cam.  The engine is makes the Cuda alot of fun to drive.

That's interesting...

So just how hard is it to come by a decent 340 block?

And my apologies for renewing a 120-day old post - I'm new here...

Well, a stock blockj you need to pay for, and have sonic tested to see what you can do with it. However, that's true regardless of 340, 360, or 318. If you plan to go bigger stroke, you need to find out if the block will live that way. In many cases, sleeving one or two holes, plus paying for a GOOD sonic test that provides usable results will cost a bit less than the new Mopar blocks. In some cases with them, the old factory castings are thicker where it counts. Regardless of what Mopar says. Any 340 block is a good starting spot, but if you need a larger oversize like .040 or .060 over, those pistons are more $$. I've recently agreed to buy std bore blocks at $400, becuase they are getting harder to find. Lots of .030 overs, but if they are rusty, or tapered, and pass sonic, then they will need the pricier pistons.

I'll withhold judging this combo until the dyno sheets are posted.  It's been 3 weeks since he made that claim and still no actual dyno chart posted.  We shall see I guess.....

521 H.P. & 520 ft/lbs Torque,  the dyno sheet is up here;

Whats the verdict ? Can smallblocks really make that much on pump gasoline  ?

Of coarse a SB can make that kina power. The real questions are what does 1lb cost in HP and how much less than a BB does a SB weigh? Add a centrifugal supercharger to the mix and WHOA!

How 'bout this 408 on pump gas. . . . Turbo  :faint:

Quote
I'm at 408ci and trying to squeeze 20+ lbs of boost out of her..made 801rwhp at 20psi last dyno trip..
408ci
8.5 to 1
245/245 565lift solid flat tappet
edelbrock heads probably flow around 270 at 550lift
weld-el manifolds
twin master power t-61's with 1.1.5 ar p-trims
dual 3" downpipes with full dual 3" exhaust
727 automatic
6400rpm max...floats at 20psi ( I know, I need some more seat pressure)

Well made about the same power with the housings but boost was definetly slower...did though crank up the boost to 25 psi and put down 895whp at 6000rpm..

Car was loaded on trailer so decided to head off to the track...turned the boost back down to 20-21 psi and ran 5.80 at 124! [1/8]..but the boost came on more gradual and smooth...hooked up no problem now..just on 295/65/15 M/T street radials with stock leafs and traction bars..

Boost doesnt count Goody...

With thte right cam and enough head, they make some killer power alright. Keep in mind, the one I listed barely has .500 lift after lash.
