72 project
« on: August 19, 2006 - 01:34:22 PM »
hi

this is my first post here i don't know how i could missed this site
first of all thank you for having me and i hope that i will be here for long time

i am a newbie in muscle cars and cars period i drive BMW and care about the environment kind of guy (lame) :'(
it is started last year i saw program about the barracuda 70 hemi and when i heard the engine i got goose pumps  :scared:
i was hooked it is been almost 6 months, i have been to a lot of sites tried to read as much as i can still don't know much. ???
my dream was to get nice 70 barracuda as a project to build it, but it is hard to find good project car it is price is too much.
a month ago i found 72 barracuda with everything as parts with title and the correct vin without the engine and the trans
it had 440 with 727 automatic, leaf system and the rear end is 8.75 3.55 posi 489 case thanks to this site i found out about it

my project is to build a bad ass barracuda ppl will say i am crazy and they are right
i will put the new hemi 6.1L 425hp with Treamc 5 speed auto overdrive my wife wants the auto she want to drive it
also we have alot of traffic lights and speed pumps  :swear:

the engine ,tti headers, engine mounts, wires and the computer will come from S&P they are good
and they even going to be first to get the 6.4L 392 hemi   :droolingbounce:

the K-frame i am going with Alter kit for front and rear 4 link with Air ride suspension for the d**n speed pumps.
the last thing big tires in the back 22" big, 285 30 22"  and front 245 35 19" i dont need the back seats i am big guy i need space
i will have to cut and try to fit the tires

i want ask did anyone tried to fit 6.1l to barrcuda 70-72, what things i have to keep in mind  for this project.
from what i read the 489 is strong, do i need to go for dana 60 since my target will be 500-600 hp in the future.
the car will be for street only but sometimes i want to hit hard, is it worth to to get the dana or keep what i have.
i was going to change the gear to 3.71 or 3.91  power lock from strange since i am getting the big tires
with my combo the diameter will be almost 25.6 front 28.7 in the rear on remis 9.5" .

what should i do to fit the tires what back spacing should i use, do i need to shorten the rear end  i think it is 60.7 in for 72 barracuda.

about the look of the car i really like the 70 grill and the tail light do u think i should do it. where can i get 70 grill reproduction with light and the molding
also the tail panel light the whole section with lights and the covers i really like to do that.

i will add pictures later    i just got it 2 days ago i am really happy, cant wait to start

thank you in advance and sorry about my English

Looks like a great start
The 8 3/4 will take alot of abuse but as you know the Dana will take more
The disadvantage is the Dana weighs a ton
I wouldn't change that car to a '70.  It looks solid and you have a decent grille so why cut it.  Most people don't know the difference anyway

It's your car though and if you are gonna change everything else anyway
Go for it!!

Welcome

Welcome !!
my advice would be to spend the $$ on the Dana If you are going to rebuild the 8 3/4 anyway , if you are leaving the 8 3/4 as is then leave it in there until you have a problem with it , basicall as long as the tires spin the 8 3/4 will live , with a 4 link the life span will be limited so I would be looking a t a Dana when the 4 link is installed

thank you for the reply

i tried to call strange to ask  them but they said if the car for street use
it is better to stay with 8.75 just upgrade to power locker 3.71
my main point is will i need to narrow rear end to fit my tires coz i  really want to put the 305 45 22"
to have better traction the rim is 9.5"  the 285 30 22"  is cool but i think i will have problem if i hit the gas  :burnout:
i found a post for S60 Dana 60 with LPW cover used but it looks new 4.10 with 4 links narrowed 49.5" flang to flang
35 spool he  is asking for 2700 i dont think it is what i want

thanks again

How much does Street & Performance (It's them, right?) charge for the complete 6.1, with headers and all?
Have you done any inqueries about how the Air Ride suspension will fit after you cut the rear?

Your ideas for your car is pretty similar to mine, and i too got a '72 e-body, a Challenger Rallye.
Only, i don't intend to be as radical as you.

And welcome to CCC!
I hope you will make many posts about your progress here, it's bound to be a interesting read!

PS: Where are you from?
I notice your email is uae4ever1@gmail.com, but i doubt that "uae" is short for "United Arab Emirates", considering the background in your pics.

Ornamental it is good to find someone with the same plans as me
i will get the engine and the trans from Street and performance i talked to mark he is a nice guy
we didn't discuss the price since it wont be the engine only there are a lot of parts we have to go through and since i am newbie
i was going to ask the ppl here if they can go through the engine price sheet and tell me what should get
i am not in the fancy i don't have anything for the engine bay so any help i will be glad it is the small things i am not sure
if i need them or not
here is the link http://www.hotrodlane.cc/pricesheets/325%20(6.1)%20Hemi%20Engine%20Price%20List.pdf
the engine will be around 7590-7900 for engine mount will be for 100-139
the wire harness they are the only place with complete working wire
also you will need the oil pan, fuel tank with inside pump
he offered to send me the dvd for the 6.1L installation then i can discuss what i want

BTW:  i didn't take the pictures it is from the previous owner i didn't take any picture yet i will soon sorry about that

yes i am from UAE did you visited before it is really nice here

thankx i will keep posting with progress yesterday finished removing all the parts from the car
and for newbie i figured couple parts and sorted out all of them thank god i found most of the molding chrome i know it is expensive
it need some care and it will be new.

Hey, it's cool to have someone from UAE here!!
Me, i'm from Norway. We too are plagued with speed bumps,
and not to mention photoboxes.  :villagers:
I would like to visit UAE!
Dubai is absolutely worth a visit, i'm told by people who's been there.

Eh, we got another thing in common, other than plans, and build year:
The pic in my avatar is also taken by a previous owner. :D

I think what you're building can be called Pro Touring. Or G-Machine, if you buy Popular Hot Rodding's claim to have been first in covering the then new style.
Check out these websites:

www.pro-touring.com
This is a forum for people who like their classic muscle the way you describe your goal.
It's mostly Ford and Chevy people there though, but they're still muscle car enthusiasts just like yourself!

www.popularhotrodding.com
This is the website of the magazine Popular Hot Rodding.
I would suggest subscribing to it if you cannot find it in stores where you live.

www.moparmusclemagazine.com
This is the website of the magazine Mopar Muscle.
Also worth subscribing to.

Unless you're already familiar with them, i believe you can be further inspired.

Have you been thinking about the cooling of your engine?
I have been considering a Flex-a-lite radiator: http://www.flex-a-lite.com/auto/html/aluminum_radiator.html
Less weight, and more efficient cooling than stock. But this can be said for most aluminium radiators.
I must confess to have been swayed by this video: http://www.flex-a-lite.com/auto/html/aluminum_radiator.html#Radiator

About the rear axle, i don't know much, but i believe Chryco Psycho gave you a very good advise.
No need to spend $$$ on a rear if you eventually will replace it in the near future.

i want start a trend in my country for classic cars it is only Chevy here and ford
:worshippy
Show them the way of Mopar!

but i am planing to visit Norway in near future

about the photo boxes here it is killer every 10 km you will find one also now they have the mobile one
also hiding in cars  :swear:
there is road going to the next city maybe 80 km there are almost 20 in each side of the road  :banghead:

i already subcribed to hotrod and hot rodding 2 years still didn't get my first issue it is been month an half
the first one take time then it will be ok

about the radiator i was planing to custom make the radiator i didn't know what space i will get with the 6.1l hemi
in the 72 body also here it will be cheaper to build one

Hey, hope you get to come to Norway during january-february-march if the snow is part of what you're hoping to experience! And now that you've told about the forrests of photoboxes along your roads, i won't be complaining about the relatively few we've got here! :eek7:

The magazines takes their time before they start to come, but after that, they're pretty regular!

With the blocks being the same, i guess the 6.1 will be equal to a 5.7, in regarding how much room it demands in the engine bay.
Here's a link to a page with a engine bay picture of a 5.7:
http://mysite.verizon.net/ls6ron/

But yeah, i guess it's better to think about the cooling after you got the engine in it's place.
Less of those nasty surprises that way.
