Replacing the old 340 with a new engine
« on: August 20, 2006 - 01:54:33 AM »
I intend to replace the 340 in my Challenger in the not so far future, and the 6.1 Hemi is one of the hotter ideas i have for a replacement.

But it's sort of pricey, and when it comes to bang for the buck, a stroked LA like the 402 seems to be better.
Then, i've noticed that Mopar crates don't have the best reputation concerning build quality, also here at CCC in for instance the thread Best crate motor
Also, fuel economy is maybe better with the 6.1?

Maybe have a 6.1 pulled out of a wrecked SRT-8?
Anyone who have an idea of what this might cost, and what i should be prepared to fork out for in extra expences?
Is the 5 speed tranny worth getting also, or should i keep the 727 and get a Gear Vendor (After NZ440R/T makes it work with autoshift)?

Then there's the option of having a engine built. I live in Norway, and engine shops here is expensive.
A rebuild of a old engine costs the same as two crates... So maybe have a motor built by a machine shop in the states?

With a limit of $7000 (I got shipping and norwegian taxes to think of too), and the use is purely street and the occasional red light drag race. Pump gas choices are 92, 95 and 98 octane. I would like to go beyond 400 HP.
I would really be glad to get some input from you guys on this!

With a budget of $7000 I would stick to a small block to avoid conversion costs (tranny, rad , motor mounts, computer, accessories, etc.)  The MP crate 360 can be had with 395hp and the stroked version with 435 HP I believe.  A hot 360 for the street should be lots of fun.

In Mopar Muscle, i've read about a 410" and a 440" smallblock that's about to come as crate engines.
Those really seems hot to me, but i have'nt been able to dig up any info about when they'll be released.

But an ad for a big inch small block crate that's already on the market, now that's interesting!

You really need to make the choice. You wont get a 6.1/5.7 hemi in there for less than $7K tho. The crate version has less "stuff" on it than a JY one, and it comes with the wiring and computer to run it. A JY car will need hours of debugging, plus you'll need the fuel system, exh and cooling system parts. If you need to pay a shop for that, you'll be well over $10K before it's running. For under $6KUS, you could have a very stout 408/416 built here, and shipped over. I wouldnt trust a crate engine besides the 360 based ones. Just my .02 anyway. Truthfully tho, you could build a real nice Magnum based 360 and the FAST or similar management system for $7K and have (430hp/450tq)great power, cheaper low octane pump fuel, and better milage and driveability than a bigger carburated 416.

I found the article it is in Mopar Muscle May 2006 Volume 19, Number5  and the title is "Small Block Monsters from MOPAR" Big power and cubes right from the crate
at the end of the article it says for further info go to mopar.com or call 1-888-528-HEMI  in the article it is listed as a 440 Super Commando rated at an estimated 500hp 535 ft-lbs of Torque.
I was on the website and could not find it i would suggest calling

Thank you very much for helping out!

I guess you're right, i better give them a call.
What numbers does "HEMI" in 1-888-528-HEMI mean?
Me be dumb Joe Foreigner, no understand letters in telephone number.

Damned advertising and marketing people, numbers just are'nt good enough for them.
Bill Hicks was right, they should kill themselves.
Particulary since they seem unable to update the frigging website every now and then when they got something new.
The 2005 Performance Catalog is NEW on Mopar.com.
2005!
We're over half way through with 2006 here, guys!

On your key pad of your phone each number has 3 letters on each number key, eg: [2 ABC] [3 DEF] etc
Use "HEMI" with the corresponding numbers - Hemi would equal 4364.

So, you need to call: 001-888-528-4364

Ah, just like on my mobile then. How blindingly obvious in retrospect.

Thank you for breaking the code for me!

I've tried to call a few times, but no answer.
And yeah, i've taken different timezones in consideration.
Maybe i'll just have to keep trying until somebody answers...

Hi, ifyou are living in Norway why don't you use Swedish Engine Shops?  There is plenty of PRO engine builders in Sweden.

Now that's also an option worth checking into for my part.
Thank's very much for reminding me that there's possibillities in what's practically my neighbourhood!
