My Fender Tag and an Unidentified Tag
« on: June 25, 2003 - 11:35:27 AM »
Hey guys/girls!  I was talking to LB about this, but he suggested checking it out with others because we don't know what it is.  The rectangular tag was found underneath my fender tag and as far as I know, I have been the only person to remove the tag from the car.  The tag has some writing on it, but since it's very brittle, I don't want to risk damaging it anymore by trying to clean up around the numbers and letters.  Chryco, have any ideas what this is?  ???

I'm not sure what the correct term for it is, but it's like a supplimental tag.  When they run out of room on the primary tag they stamp the additional options on this tag and attach it off to the side of the regular tag.  I'm not sure how it got under yours, but I'm pretty sure that is what it is.

Pistol Gripper, thanks for the information.  Like LB, I too thought they made two tags that look alike.  I'm curious now to see just what writing is on the second tag.  :o

No this doesn't make it a "two tag" car. As the main tag is not filled up enough with codes, you would need about 10+ more coded options on it, before they added a second tag, and then it would be full sized.

I believe it is more of an inspection tag. My 74 rallye charger had one that was very similar, long and thin and it had one or two letters stamped into it like yours. It was attached under one corner of the main tag with one of the normal screws. But I don't know what the initial indicates..

Thanks Chryco,

I pulled the back seat on my Chally and found a similar tag hooked to the springs, if I can get it off, I'll scan a picture of it.  Nice and shiny, some kind of writing on it, doesn't look like it's ever seen daylight.

I'm almost 100% sure that type of tag is also attached to my back seat, like pistol gripper has on his car.

Let's try this again... when I pulled the carpet out of my 'Cuda... I found 2 white tags for the front and rear seats... here's what each says...

J.P. Stevens & Co., Inc.
1776 EX8
Black
1969 Chrysler "A" Body
Front Bench
7/22/68

and the other one:

J.P. Stevens & Co., Inc.
1777 CX8
Black
1968 Chrysler "A" Body
Rear BenchS/23 & 27
6/17/68

A 1968 Rear seat and a 1969 Front seat?! My car is a fairly early model year for '69... August 26th... ::) I've included a pic too...

LB, that's weird.  Your rear seat just must have been sitting around while your car was being assembled, so they just stuck that in it.  A guy in Mopar Muscle had the same thing done to his '73 Challenger; it had various '72 interior pieces in it.  It's the same case with a few of my pieces, also.

hey streetcharged69!
i read about the tags that you have run across. what they say they are are tags from the manufacturer of the parts that were used on the cars. they pretty much let the installer know that the part was inspected and is ready to use. they are also used as indentifiers. mostly they were discarded after installation but some people on the assembly lines would just put them on the car under any screw. i have seen them in other locations besides under or near fendertags. i also worked with a company who packaged ford truck parts for export to other countries and these very same tags were on the truck parts. usally we never took the tag off but i'm sure they did once the parts were installed. so thats what i've come to know about these strange tags.  :P :P keep on moparin!!!
get in, sit down, buckle up, and hold on! see you later, BYE!!

Our Dart has about 8 inches of the same tag coming out from underneath the fender tag. The other Dart we just picked up only had a small chunk underneath the tag. Like Chryco said, they were supposed to cut off chunks on the assy. line as the work was completed so there are alot of cars with only a small piece under the tag.
