Bit of a problem?
« on: August 23, 2006 - 11:31:36 AM »
I finaly got around to decoding the vin today.... Here it is:
VS29H0B******

So for those who love decoding vin's, check it out, and skip the next section.... And you'll see why the poll question is what it is.

Now for those who don't like decoding:
V= Plymouth Duster
S=Duster 340
29= 2 door sports Hardtop
H= 340 V-8
0= 1970
B= Hamtramck MI.
******= it's the rest of the vin that means some, but not a whole lot
 :smokin:

So, the question again:
Restore or to go ahead as originaly planned (before this little fact came up) build a first drag car using 440.
Condition, somewhere around here on this site, is pictures of this car. The fender tag is gone... But the VIN tag is there. Not a whole lot there for this car, hince why I said drag project from the get go..... I looked at the motor mounts that are welded to the subframe, and they appear to be V-8, so I thought probably used to be a 318 car.... Guess not... Anyway, One question about the 340 cars is, about the rear axle. What was the common used rear axle on Duster 340 cars? :clueless: I would think that it would be the 8 3/4 unit, but that is not what's in there.... This car will never be able to get restored to "numbers matching" condition,  ::) but I'm pretty sure that after a lot of looking and such, I could probably find a 340 block. :violin: The guy who I got the car from was using it mostly as a parts car, and said the guy who had the car before hand had cut the tran's hump to change it from a automatic to a manual, so I'm gonna say it's safe to assume that this car was an automatic originaly (I have the piece that was cut to make it a 4 speed car). Anyway, so anyone got any questions comments, concerns?

Can`t really tell you what to do , there used to be lots of Duaters around to Cut up , my car was the same 340  4 spd originally & was converted to a race car in 72 , when I bought it I got the registration from 71 so it was only driven 1 year on the street
personally I would prefer to see you use a dfferent body , but as you say you cannot really restore this car properly & it is your car

I voted "Restore" because I'm not a drag racer, but I agree with Chryco - you should do what will make you happier.

Well, I would like to use a '70 Duster, or equivalent body style/weight to make into a drag car, but would hate to use an original Duster 340 body, even though about the only way you can tell what is it, is to decode then VIN.... As I had said above, this car want ever be restored to it's original condition, but it can be made back into a Duster 340.... I like the Duster 340 cars, but as I've stated, I'd like to have a Duster 440.... If I chose to try and restore this car back to a Duster 340 car, and run a 4 speed, from those that have done this from this far gone, might what would I be looking at getting into versus building a drag car from this condition? Decisions decisions, why couldn't I have found a '70 'Cuda in this shape, and it had been an original Hemi car, lol. Anyway, :feedback: ::)

so this is a duster 340 without the origional 340, trans , or rear? sounds like the condition is pretty sad if somebody was useing it for parts. im going to say have fun with it, the chances of a non numbers matching duster ever being worth much restored is about the same as wining the lotory..yeah it could happen some day, but dont hold your breath! the value of a duster is in the amount of fun it brings you...and they are fun!

PM or email with VIN if you like, I can check and see if i know of any of the numbers matching bits for you.

If you bought it to build a race car, then by all means do so, it is your car. I had a 440 Duster once, it was a blast to drive.  :2thumbs:

What I had in mind with the car as far as the "resto... side of things" was this:
-340 Motor, try and get a date correct block....
-Probably go ahead and make it a 4 speed (I have a friend who has a A-833)
-Check and see exactly what the rear axle is (it looks like a 8 1/4 rear..)
-Go ahead, replace the trunk with replacement parts, and paint it maybe
-Sublime green or something with the Duster 340 graphics, and the dual sccop hood.....
-Go ahead, locate up some correct bucket seats, and through in a black interior, and probably run some AC
-Also, upgrade to disc brakes, after all, there isn't a fender tag
Basicaly, I'd have a sortof restored 340 Duster, but with a twist. The exterior would be kind of close to what it might have been like back then, but with a few mod's. The 340, of course, will be built. What kind of build, don't know yet.
Now if it's a drag car... Well... I've got other posts for descriptions, but it want be nothing like it is above. As far as the current rear axle, I'm not sure if it's the original or not, I figured the Duster 340 cars would all come with atleast an 8 3/4 rear  ??? :dunno: :clueless: Any how, I guess this is something I'm just gonna have to ponder on ::) :smokin:
The choice running back and fourth in my mind is,
1970 Plymouth Duster 340 4-speed (fun street car)
                  -OR-
1970 Plymouth Duster 440 built auto (drag)
