Steering Column/Horn/Ignition Problem

I am having a problem with my steering column/horn on my Challenger.  It is not so much that neither one of them works, but I can not get to the inner part of the column to get the the parts.  There is a round metal piece that is attached to the column that blocks the wires and horn plate.  I thought that a steering wheel puller could get that off, but the more I think about it, the more I think that will not work.  I need to get back there because something is causing a short and sometimes the ignition does not engage.  I tried to mess with it with the metal piece in the way, but now when I turn the wheel to the right the horn sounds    Any help with getting back there would be much appreciated.  Thanks.

I don't know what steering wheel you have, but if you are trying to get the crush-can off for the first time, you will definitely need a steering wheel puller.

It is not the crush can, but a flat disc like metal piece that has raised up metal in the shape of a Y on it attached to the main rod.

After the ribbed spacer comes off with the puller I believe that the snap ring on the shaft has to be removed to slide off the next section.

Here is a picture of the piece.  I have tried to unscrew it and it will not budge.  Everything I need to get at is behind it.

that is a cheap Grant wheel adapter , use a 3 bolt damper puller to pull it off

Those cheap Grant adaptors will end up breaking off your turn signal release arms too. Get another crush can and shorten it or get the 4" truck wheel adapter then modify your wheel to fit it.

Thanks again for all the help guys.  Got the piece off last night and got everything fixed up for now.  The horn relay disc had become seperated and was causing the short and the problem with it going off all the time.  Everything is put back together and running great.

I had a similar issue. My horn wire had come off from the horn button and was dancing around inside the crush can honking when I made turns.

it was an easy fix
