Hi from Abilene, TX

I last posted here in March when I was talking about getting my '70 Cuda out of storage.  I bought this car 14 years ago and it's been in storage in Wisconsin for the past 9 years.  I had it transported to Abilene and got it running a few weeks ago.  Drove it around the block a few times and pulled it into the garage and started tearing it down to a bare chassis for bodywork.  It's a 340, 4-speed car with burnt orange metallic paint, black interior, tinted windows, ralley dash, rim blow steering wheel, and road lamps .  Still has the original engine, even the original ralley wheels.  Interior is decent for a 36 year old car, front bucket seats are shredded and a few cracks in the dashpad, but otherwise not bad.  Trunk floor is gone with rust working its way into the lower rear quarters, which is the way it was when I put it away.  I really thought there would be a lot more rust in it, but after tearing everything down the only other rust I found was in the pan under the driver's feet and around the brake booster where a bunch of leaves and crap had laid down in the vents over the years.  My 15 year old son thinks we're going to restore it so he can drive it around.  Yeah...  right...

Thanks all...

It felt great to drive it again after 9 years.  It took a bit to get it running.  I had an electronic ignition on it and
the module was bad.  Fuel tank was full of rust and pickup was clogged.  I threw a plastic boat tank in the trunk
and hooked it up to the fuel line.  Carb was all mucked up.  Tried to clean it up, but still couldn't get it to pass any fuel.  Burnt up a starter cranking the hell out out of it.  Pulled an old 750 Holley off the shelf and bolted it on and it fired right up.  It idled and ran great.  In fact it ran better than I ever remembered it running.  I spent a few hours racing up and down the county roads around the house here until a sheriffs car started prowling around.  With no insurance and an Ohio registration that expired 10 years ago, I figured I'd better start taking it apart for the bodywork before I got into trouble.

I bought this when you could still find a decent mopar in the Sunday classifieds.  I remember running around for several weeks checking out different cars.  Passed on a few roadrunners and super bees and then found a young guy who was driving this around and wanted $5000 for it.  Tried to talk him down to $3500, but he had to have $5G for something.  I drove it for a few years until the Air Force sent me to Guam for two years in '97.  I hauled it up to Wisconsin and stuck it my mother's garage under a cover.  The picture above is just after I pulled it out of her garage and was cleaning it up a bit.

mmccarty,

Aren't you glad that you that you kept it.  I retired from the Navy in 2003.  I was stationed in Japan for many years and had a 71 Superbee in storage and now I try to drive if at least once a month.  Maybe more!!

Good Job!!
