Dome light question.

I know on a 70 E-Body, the switch in the door jamb is a 2 prong type that interrupts power going to the dome light when the door is closed. I am working on a 71 now that has a 3 prong type of switch in the door jamb. I am confused as to what the third wire could be for(I don't have a 71 shop-manual). I assume 12 volts should be on one wire, the another would run to the dome light, the third wire??  Anyone know?

Maybe time delay on key light or overhead console lights? I retro fitted mine but looking back I put two switches in, one at the hinge jamb and one at the aft door jamb

  I didn't consider the delay possibility. Further investingation is needed here.
