Painting PPG on top of Dupont?
« on: August 28, 2006 - 06:50:52 AM »
Any problems with putting PPG  BC/CC over Dupont BC/CC that was sprayed over 2 years ago? I can get PPG for $238 a gallon now where the Dupont is $389 a gallon. I have to respray this thing from bumper to bumper when I get it all assembled.

As long as the last job was done right and the DuPont bonded well, and is not peeling.  It should be fine to scuff, clean with wax and grease remover and shoot PPG epoxy primer and paint.  That's hard to believe that DuPont is higher than PPG, PPG is better!

Do your prep work i.e dull the old paint and degrease everything then shoot a primer sealer over the whole car so there is no chance of interaction between the two paints cause you never know and its better to be safe than sorry then block sand your primer degrease again and begin shooting the paint. Hope this helps.

You can use enamels over enamels, sealer is always recommended. If the paint is over 90 days old you shouldn't need it but it is good insurance against lifting the previous paint. Even sealer won't help if you slam on 2 heavy coats real quick. Easy on the first and second coat. Allow plenty of flash time. If the paint is still fresh say within 90 days and you put a Urathane paint over an enamel you can expect trouble.

My husband uses PPG or house of kolor he likes them better. Also he says use a sealer or reprimer to keep the paints for interacting to prevent the lifting.

Well , I think I have found out that that cheaper price for PPG was for a cheaper brand of PPG. The PPG brand equal to the Dupont I was using is about the same price, so ......... I will just get the same Dupont that I bought the first time and won't have to worry about any "reaction"

I have used both and would have to say I like PPG over dupont as it seems easier to use and always has a great shine. I put it on both my Challenger RT and my cuda.
