Vin Number on 67 year 340?
« on: August 29, 2006 - 12:52:34 PM »
Ok So, I have something that has been bugging me for quite some time now.

I have a 68 Barracuda, It's a 340 car, but I have been looking for the Vin # To find if it was numbers matching.
I did find the number on the transmission to be correct, but on the Engine was different.

When I looked, I couldn't find any exact detailed information on where a 67 340 would have the Vin Number. I did however,
find that there is a stamped number on the Drivers side , front of the block..right by the water pump, below the head. Is this the
correct location for the number? Everything else I've ever seen keeps saying it should be on the bottom somewhere near the oil pan
on the drivers side.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance, you guys are awesome here!

:2thumbs: On small blocks the EINis on the drivers side at the front of the block, just below the cylider head.the breakdown for the 68-74 EIN consists of 13 digits plus character coes and looks like this.
first letter or first two letters:plant code(pm,mound road,pt:trenton:mvormn, maryland;andw, winnsor.
next three didgits; the cubic inch dispacement 225,318,340,383,426,440.
next four digits;this code represents the 10,000-day calender.
last four didgits;these are the daily sequential numbers of engines built.

The early VIN stamps on small blocks was on the rear bell (top of the transmission mating surface)

If I remember right, they did not start stamping engine and tranny VINs until sometime during the 1968 model year.

I think the number you need to match will be the vehicle order# from your fender tag to the location Barry suggested.

Nope. The vehicle order number will not be on the engine.

I've heard there is no way to determine an original engine before 1968, and also on some 68's as well. Is that true?

even if the vin is not on the engine, it would have to have a casting date before the cars production date to be # matching. if i recall correctly it normaly took about 2 months from casting till assembly in a car?? the stamped #s are assembly date, obviously this has to be before the cars build date also

To shed some light on the subject. Seen as i got a 68 cuda and a 69 cuda. What i have found to be true is that, most 68's don't have a vin stamped on the block, and really only started stamping the 69 model year and later cars. Even my 69, doesn't have a engine that was cast 2 months back. Turns out they pulled a 67 340 dated block, that must have been sitting around in storage, and threw it in mine.

Hmm, so what You're saying is... I may be beating on my Original 340!

When I pull the motor out this fall/winter I'll get pictures for you guys... The number just below the head on the drivers side looked to be a stamped vin# but hey.. what do I know.  :icon16:

Thanks for the help guys! Much appreciated!

Oh, one more thing... I have the current build sheet as well.. would that have any information on it to help find out if its the original motor?

Hey Krazed,
You mentioned that you found the VIN on the transmission, the engine and trans were stamped at the same time. So, if your tranny has a VIN and your engine does not, then the engine is most likely from a different car.

Well, my engine is unknown as to where it came from. The stamped number on the front is almost unreadable.. I need to take off a few things before I can see it for sure. The engine is also very greasy/dirty and its impossible to find or read much.

Mostly, I just want to know where to look when I get things apart! If it's not numbers matching , oh well! I'm not worried about it and I don't expect it to match really.
