Standard vs Synthetic oil
« on: August 29, 2006 - 07:48:40 PM »
What oil do you guys use in your engines?  I have a 440 six pack - rebuilt 2 years ago and with 2000 mile on it since, and I'm considering synthetic oil (Mobil 1).  Here in Seattle the weather never gets below 20 degrees so I'm thinking 10-30 SAE.  What do you guys think and which filter do you recommend?

I can definitely say this. I have a 98 Honda (family car, not tuner) It used to burn about a quart every 3000mi using conventional oil. I tried Mobile 1 just to not have to do il changes as often. Around 3000mi is went to add a quart thinking it burned away and the car was stil at the full level. Not a drop was burned, I never really payed attention to any of the adds or reports but personal experience is just that. he oil definitely takes on more abuse. I figured the guides were shot in the motor. But it turned out to be burn away. I'm impressed with the synthetic stuff

I run 15w-40 shell rotella diesel oil. year round, daily driven, every ~3,000mile changes with a WIX filter and no issues/problems with it.  :2thumbs:

as long as the engine has 400 miles on to seat the piston rings in it is OK to use synthetic oil , I use Castrol syntec 5-50
in you case I would wait a few mor emiles before switching
Rotella is a great choice also & has the needed Zinc additives to protect the cam etc , also Mopar HD 10-30 diesel oil

I just don't buy into the synthetic hype in old Mopar engines. I run20w-50 Valvaline racing oil with a WIX filter and have never had any issues/problems with it.

It was my understanding that diesel oil doesnt have the corrosion resistance that causes break down that oil intended for gas engines does. Diesel has a lubrication quality in itself. Gas doesnt. As the miles add up the engine oil gets impregnated with fuel from blow by past the rings. Diesel is basically an oil based fuel so it really doesnt react negatively with the engine oil. Gas works the opposite. It steadily breaks the oil down as the time passes, so engine oil oer gas engines have additives that help prevent that. Can any one give me a factual reason as to why you would run diesel oil in a gas engine?

al new oils have reduced Zinc & phosphate [I think] this is what protects the cam , you need some additive to replace the zinc that is no longer in oils in eough quantity to protect the cam

I didnt finish posting what i was gonna say. I hit the post button. I was gonna say Red Line is a reputable chemical company. They have a posted PDF that shows a bunch of stats regarding conventional and synthetic motor oils. Here is the pdf. Not to argue with anyone. Everyone has there personal opinion about oil Thats what keeps so many products on the market. But if old school is the way to go then we should be using simple oil blends from the 60's. Modern day conventional oil is proven to be better than old conventional oil. So why isn't more modern day synthetic better than modern conventional? For those that are willing to read this... Follow the post.

Look on the bottle for the star burst logo. You do not want oil with the starburst logo. These are modern blends with the reduced zinc for catalitic converters, and it is ok for roller camed modern engines. The heavier weight oils seem to not have this logo, same for the diesel oil's. Mobil1 15w-50 will not have the logo.

Diesel engine oils will work just as well as the new low phosphate oils, you will probably never see a oil failure with either one.
That said, there IS no hype. Comparing synthetic oil to petroleum oil is like comapring a Daewoo to a mercedes.

Now there is some arguement that diesel oil will not tolerate gas dilution of the oil as well ???

My personal feelings on that is that if you change your oil on a regular basis and your carb is set up properly, it's not an issue.
