Shoulder Belts
« on: August 29, 2006 - 09:31:10 PM »
Just curious.  I always wear the lapbelt only.  Can't stand that shoulder belt in the 73 Challenger.  It's purely an aesthetic problem though.

I've yet to use it since I've owned the car. However, my next track outing? I'll be using it... :burnout:

Wonder if an officer of the law would be so kind as to grant a citation for not wearing it??  Especially since the belt thing is now a serious criminal offense.

I use it.
Care to think about why it's there?
I'll give you a couple of possible options:

A: Only to hinder you in looking cool while cruising.
B: To protect you in a (potentially fatal) crash
C: Because somebody threw it in the interiordesign as a joke, but nobody noticed it until the cars were in the showrooms, and by then it was too late to do anything about it.

I do use mine, even though they are a pain, but not that I know that my 74 auto retractors are actually stock I'll be swapping over to those.

One of the many reasons I converted to modern safety belts. They don't retract, a real pain in the arse!  :banghead:
Changing the song on the CD, pulling the park brake and reaching the glove-box (is impossible). With the new modern belts the shoulder belt is gone completely, one belt and that's it. I can adjust the passenger mirror they're that good!

So, a big NO from me.   :woo:

I converted mine over to the modern three point inertia type belts, and use a belt whenever I drive. After 22 years in law enforcement I've seen what kind of difference seat and shoulder restraints make, even in a low speed crash.

ive got the same 2 piece setup in my 72 charger..its a pain but at over 25 i always wore both. after 15 years circle track racing i realise what belts can do for ya, and that even if you dont plann to hit something you might.

I wish someone would market a set specifically to retrofit our cars. A bolt-in w/ retractors.
I'd pay whatever to have modern belts in my '70 that looked at performed right.
