Newbie from Nebraska
« on: August 31, 2006 - 01:27:39 PM »
Hi fellow muscleheads;

Just picked up a '70 Cuda earlier this week that I'm starting a total restoration on.  Originally found it on eBay, but since it was close enough, I was able to drive over and look at it.  The owner had a friend list it, since he didn't have a computer or Internet.  I helped him along, and when the bidding went higher than what I could afford, I passed on bidding myself.  I was on the phone with him when the bidding ended, so he could see how it ended.

It was scheduled to be picked up a couple weeks ago, and I thought that would be the last I'd ever see of it, since the high bidder was many states away.  The next Monday, the owner calls me, saying the deal fell through, and did I want the car.  I offered a couple thousand less, and it was mine.  Sooner or later, when you sow enough kindness, it pays you back.

It's a real BS23H 340 'Cuda, with all original drivetrain.  I bought it from the original owner who ordered it new with cash when he got out of 'Nam in late '69.  He ordered it in Ivy Green Metallic, since he was a Marine.  Not a lot of options, which made for a good sleeper.  In '76 or '77 he parked it when he got a new car, never intending to let it sit.  It'd been sitting in a shed for the last 30 years.  The rear end was sticking out and the trunk is rusty, but the floor pans still have the paint on them, with only 2 little holes under the parking brake.

He also wrote me a 3-page letter telling all about the history of the car, including 36 cent gas and the # of women he and his cousins scored with in it (71!).  Invaluable.  I'll be keeping him informed about the progress, and you can bet I'll let him drive it again when it's all done.

I'm documenting the whole thing on my website http://jstewart.inebraska.com/cuda.htm so others can watch, too.  It's going to take a couple years, but my better half works at a body shop (office), and I used to own a chain of tune-up shops in a former life.

This is my 2nd Mopar muscle car.  I sold a '72 Challenger with a transplanted 440 in it a couple months ago in search of a better platform to restore.  It was also an eBay car, but this one I never saw before it arrived at my doorstep (yeah, yeah, I know.  Shiny eBay orange paint job sells a lot of cars).  It was a mess.  I got it up to driver status and sold it, fortunately coming out ahead (if you don't count labor).

I've been mostly a Chevy guy growing up, but always loved the looks of Cudas and Challengers.  The goal is to have one of each of the Big 3 (Chevelle, Mustang and Cuda).  I already have the Chevelle (Its history is almost as good as this one).  I've had a lot of Mustangs, but stupidly sold all of them along with the rest of the cars that would have made me rich had I kept them.  A year ago I figured I better start making a list before I forgot about more than I remembered.  They're also on my personal website at http://jstewart.inebraska.com/vehicles.htm

Looking forward to getting to know the family here.

Welcome to the site, great find. Love the story about the women that the guy and his cousin scored with.
Just be careful, there might be some DNA left on the back seat.lol

My first response was Yeeeeewww!   :22yikes:  Don't worry, the rear seats have a couple of rips in them so they'll get recovered.

I didn't ask, but I hope #71 was his wife.    :naughty:

Welcome to the site, JD!!!  First off, congrats on purchasing that car!!  Secondly, that's awesome he gave you a little history on the car and that he was willing to offer it to you at a more reasonable price.  It looks like it's a very nice start and should really shine nicely when it's all finished! :2thumbs:  I'd assume you plan on going original with everything? (paint, interior color, etc.)

Welcome to the site 70340cuda. Where in Nebraska are you from? I grew up in a small town called Genoa and remember a 70 Cuda 340 colum shift 727 that was located outside of Saint Edwards, Nebraska. I looked at the car once when I went back to visit in the late 80's but never bought the car. I could of bought it years ago. It was also a green car with bucket seats. Good luck with the project and keep us posted with your progress.

I had planned on changing the color to either Vitamin C or Sublime, since I didn't care much for the green car.  I'm now rethinking that plan.  I just got the Challenger and Barracuda Restoration Guide (by Paul Herd) by UPS an hour ago.  On page 190 it says that "Colored bodyside moldings were available on the base Barracuda or Gran Coupe models only."  Well, I have a 'Cuda with the V5F bodyside moldings and perimeter pinstripes.  I have Herd's Chevelle book and there are some mistakes in there as well.

Those moldings plus the fact that it's a column shift car may make it more rare than I imagined.  As much as I don't like the grandma's car/sleeper look, I might be seriously hurting the value of the car by changing anything.  What do you all think?

:wow:  THIS IS THAT CAR!!!  You want to know what else is weird?  I lived in Genoa from '74~'76.  I used to drive my '66 Mustang fastback to St. Edward, as it was known as a Mustang town back then.  I remember this guy's wife's Grabber Blue Mach 1 from 30 years ago.

How much was the car back then?  He only decided to sell it now as his son is a senior and they're going to use the money to buy an Eclipse (imagine that).

I really don't remember the exact price we talked about but I know it was around $1,000. Pretty cheap but it had already been sitting for sometime but was a complete Cuda. I'll have to check in my paper work what I wrote down about the car as I never throw Mopar papers away. I think the guys last name was Shaefer and the car was bought new in Columbus Nebraska. I graduated from Genoa high school in 74 and went to Milford technical college before working for Sand construction company out of Columbus, Nebraska and ending up in southern, IL. in 1976.
You are right about St. Edward being a Mustang town back then. It was the place to go if you were looking for a street race and they hated everything but fords. I never dreamed he even still had the Cuda after all these years.
