Backup lights on when the trans is in Drive!
« on: September 01, 2006 - 03:52:08 PM »
I just hooked up a new wires to the neutral safety switch on my trans to get back up light and to prevent starting up the car in drive. When I put the car in reverse the backups light came one. And I was really happy, but when I put the car in drive the lighted up again. Is the error in the neutral safety switch? The back up light come on in just reverse and drive. not in neutral or park. Can i remove the switch without losing trans fluid? I have a new neutral safety switch it is to a 70 Charger, but they are the same right?

Does it only crank in park and neutral?
Yes you can remove the switch without losing fluid, you just jack the car up higher on the driver side so the fluid goes to the passenger side.

Try adjusting the linkage in Neutral.  Disconnect the linkage, put the trans in neutral, put the shifter on "N", then adjust the linkage till it just falls into the hole.

NO it cranks in all gears. The grounding from the neutral safety switch does not work. So it is grounded to the chasie on the start relay. I'll try replacing the neutral safety switch and see if this helps. And get back to you guys with what I find out.

Before you pull the switch, use a test light with the clip on 12v and probe the center ground pin on the switch, while in park or neutral. If you get a light, the switch is good. Keep tracing the wire into the car, behind the fuse box till you get to the starter relay.

The plastic piece on the VB linkage(inside) could be broke.I will have to try to get a picture so you understand what I mean.
Got it!

But Terry,
He says that reverse lights come on when he puts it in reverse. That would be the plastic piece pushing in the switch, so it shouldn't be broken. The ground comes from the metal part of the lever touching the center pin of the switch, grounding it. He needs ro check for ground first and will probably find it there. His starting problem is probably a bad wire or connector at the bulkhead, or possibly the wrong year harness for his car.

Rob, the rev lights come on when the low spot in the plastic between the two metal prongs(park and neutral spots) lets the switch pop out further. If it was broke in the one spot I was thinking maybe the switch was popping out in the drive position? :dunno:

You're right. I reread his first post and he said the lights came on again in drive. We won't know the outcome till he fixes it and lets us know.

Ok, I've replaced the neutral safety switch and I get ground when in neutral and park. But now I don't get any backup lights at all. Do I need tp replace the plastic piece on the VB linkage? Or what could be the problem. The wire from the bulk head to the trans er completely new.

Check the 2 outside pins on the switch. They should short to each other when in reverse. If that works, hook a wire between the 2 outside connectors on the plug, the reverse lights should go on. If not, follow the 2 wires back and into the firewall. One should be 12v, the other goes to the reverse lights.
