Show Me What Trans Coolers You Are Using

I'm getting ready to purchase then install my transmission oil cooler, don't know yet what type of cooler or where I'm going to mount it. Any pictures suggestions would be very much appreciated. Please include how you plummed and attached it. My radiator doesn't have the trans cooler so I'm going 100% external so it needs to do the job, it's being used with a 2500 stall, 727 trans. I don't want to ad any air flow restriction or heat to the radiator if possible. I've seen coolers with their own fans, coolers that are long and finned for mounting along a frame rail, large square flat for in front of the radiator, etc, lots of options and I don't want to find out after I've installed it that it won't do the trick.  Thanks!

Heres my $15 junkyard trans cooler i have. I do have another b&m plate type in my passenger side inner-fender with a fan on it..but mainly this one gets the job done, i have a very efficient highstall converter now so the dual is probably not necessary. anyway, here it is.i just have a few inches of high pressure rubber line to the stock cooler lines.  As you can see its offset to the radiator so it doesnt block much flow..couple inches, its off the radiator support so air will go through it, and its very long six pass. Probably a good 15-17" im guesstimating.

  Really cool topic Pum6Pak.  I've thought about seperating mine out of the radiator and it would be nice to see the choices different people have made, why they went with that their choice and how they feel about it in hind sight.

I bought a heavy duty B&M cooler unit. Posistion wise was similar to a stock unit (pics to come tonight). I used a NAPA tie kit to keep it in place. I then had custom high pressure lines made up with fittings similar to those on tranny lines. I spent about $100 on those. Looks like it was really thought out, but was a pretty simple no-brainer, just talked with the guy @ NAPA and we came up with it. I have a Griffin radiator that I also had made up. What's cool about it is I gave them an old core so they made it exactly like a stock unit all in aluminum. Again I will update later with digital pics.

The tie kit that puts the cooler directly on the fins is not a very good choice. In my opinion. I've had, and seen where over time of driving/vibrations and what not those 'zip ties' can actually wear themselves into the radiator causing a leak. 

I'll be redoing my cooler lines this winter to reroute them and plumb up to both coolers. Should cost me about $30 to do and plumb a temp sender in out of aluminum line.

I will agree about the ties wearing out. Most of my driving is not hard so for me its not as critical. The B&M unit has some mounting holes but I did not want to be drilling into radiator brace. Good observation though

Ties wearing out isn't quite what I was leaning twords, they will hold up just fine.. Ties wearing INTO the radiator is what I was getting to, its constant added weight onto the core in a couple small spots, vibrations over time and what not, you'll end up with leaks. Been there, done that. There are plenty of other ways to mount a cooler without drilling holes. I didnt drill one hole mounting my big 'ol cooler. Couple bends of metal to keep it where you want it, and some insulated wire hold downs and your set. Just my opinion, I've had issues and my old radiator had two holes in it that dripped coolant whenever it was under pressure.

Thanks guys, thanks for all the pictures and information. Anyone know how much room there is in a B body between the radiator and the grill? Mine's apart right now and I need to see if I can get one of the fan type mounted in that area. Very limited places to put one of these things.

  What are your thoughts when your dealing with a car that has air conditioning in it? Placement an issue?  I know when I was driving down in Arizona my car was overheating so I had to move the fan closer to the radiator.   Would adding a transmission cooler be one too many?

You can offset it to where it doesnt block much radiator flow. The stock cooler in the radiator will still catch air from the fan, and the other while your moving..

This has been hybernating for a couple of months, just wanted to see if anyone else has any good pictures or suggestions on how they did their tranny cooler and lines. Thanks to all those who posted so far, good suggestions.
