Pentastar on front fender
« on: September 02, 2006 - 07:58:44 PM »
I was wondering if they still had the little gold pentestar emblem on the passenger side fender in 71? or was it only in 70 they did it?  If not i gotta weld up a hole in my fender!

Yes, the pentastar should be there.

The '72 Facts manual shows there should be a pentastar on my front fender, but it's not there. Two questions:
1-Should it be?, and
2-If not why did they stop doing it?

Thanks

The only passnger side fenders I have seen without the pentastar holes were either over the counter replacements or someone filled the holes in.

Do you have any reason to suspect the fender was changed years ago?

Can you find any evidence of filled holes, possibly from the back side?

Barry--no evidence of filled holes; car was purchased from original owner last November. Just seems unusual it's not there. Thought I had read somewhere a while back they were discontinued after '71.

It should be there unless something happened along the way.  ;)

:iagree:  My '72 has the pentastar only on the passenger side and it's the original fender.

It is an early '72 made 8/17/71 if that makes any difference.

Looked today--fender still has original paint---here's what I found on page 174 of the Challenger and Barracuda restoration guide from Motorbooks:

"A bronze colored Pentastar, part #2785540, was used on the lower rear portion of the right front fender of all 1967-71 models, no matter whether they were from Dodge or Plymouth. The only other place emblems were used was on the rear roof sail of the 1970 Challenger SE model. This happened to the 1970 package only, and those models with the formal roof package in 1971 did not use a medallion on the roof."

When I was in high school, my first car, a '73 Barracuda, didn't have that medallion either. So guys....was this a hit-or miss-thing by Chrysler, or did they just want to shave every penny off production costs from '72 forward courtesy of their accounting department? :clueless:

The few references I have refer to gold or bronze color against a black border; I've seen a few that have the 'strakes' in the pentastar in black, others that are all metallic.  My '71 had a silver one, but being a Nevada car I'm quite willing to believe the sun faded it to that color.

I have seen a well-restored '72 car with the emblem and my '72 passenger fender has the hole for the emblem. Apparently, some, but not all, '72 cars had the emblem.

Maybe just the earlier '72s?

Anybody with a '72-'74 E-body want to chime in?  :dunno:
