    Are the K&N air filters worth it?

    Are the K&N air filters worth it? I'm thinking of buying one to get as much air in the carb as I can. The aif filter I have now  is 3 inch raised. I was thinking of 4 inch droped, but is the extra inch at any use then? And should I get the one with or without air flow top?

    Definately worth it. They flow much better than any paper filter out there and you'll never have to replace it. I have K&N filters on everything I own. If you want the most air flow you can get then get the top to, but if your not racing the car I wouldn't worry too much about using the K&N top, it would just be overkill. BTW, I have a K&N 14X3 air filter that I've had for 20 years that has been on 3 different vehicles (I get rid of the vehicles but keep the filter!  :grinyes: ) and it's still in great shape!

    That's great to hear, I'm defiantly going to get one.
    The closest I'll be to racing is red light drag racing.  :thumbsup:

    If your carb is tuned to a restrictive air filter, and removing the air cleaner affects idle or overall performance, you might have to rejet a little. One of these little babies actually helped me with a carb issue on my fiance's car. I rebuilt the holley that was on it, and no matter what I did, it went rich after ptting the air cleaner on. So I bought her one the K&N's to fit the stock snorkle air cleaner and wella, all better.

    Question, we were just talking filters tonite. We were at a friends B-DAy party and he had the type of air cleaner on a motor he built that was on LUMPY"S R/T SE... the one CODY bought. And I remember what happened to Cody's car when it backfired though the carb. Would one of those K&N's with the top flow stop a backfire??   :scared:

    I am not sure if it would stop a real bad backfire, but they do have a metal mesh which should stop a mild backfire, but there is also a chance of messing up the gauze element.

    My plan is to use a K&N in a stock breather box. I have researched & found a taller one for a 77 Newport that I believe will work.
      I changed to k&n in my 4.6GT & it mad a noticeable improvement.

    Both me and my brother use K&N filters with a filter top, works great! But we both have functional hoodscoops. I've got an AAR hood, and he has cut a hole in his hood to get the Mustang Mach1 scoop functional.

    Don't ask... but I had flames coming out of my carb.  :22yikes: I put the K&N on it REAL fast, and it snuffed it out. Lesson learned... don't ever try to start your car without an aircleaner assembly on it.

    Like jvike, I have a functional hood scoop, so I think the airflow top helps a bunch.  :thumbsup: Yep, they are a bit pricey though.

    So the air flow top is no use on an normal rally'cuda hood? Is there anyting negative about using the air flow top compare to without air flow top on a normal hood? As I think the air flow top really looks cool  :ylsuper:

    Widing'cuda I think the concern is with a carb fire that the oil soaked guaze top can be a fire hazard. CODY had a foam air cleaner that went up in flames when his carb backfired.

    Its not quite 'no use', it will give you 'that' much more surface area to suck air from. It will of course be more effective with a scoop/cool air flowing over it..


    When it comes time, ill prolly slap a replacement k&n for my ram-air setup. Can't see why it'd hurt.  :thinkerg

    That'll prolly get you there.  Nice mod a K+N wouldn't hurt there.  Hey do you have that Vacuum Flapper stuck open?  Or is it Open all the time?  Just wondering, that looks good.
