Codeman, sounds like your making progress, before you stated it would NOT run under 13k now you say it's rough under 11K soooo may be down to a few carb adjustments (let's hope so)  At my last club meeting we were given a lesson in carb.101 it seems that getting a motor to idle & come off idle smoothly  must be the hardest trick in the bag. I suppose when you lean the carb. you are referring to the mixture screws on the idle circuit. Does this effect the RPMs or smooth out the idle? If your running at 11K you are somewhat off the idle circuit & getting into the idle transition stage where fuel is being sucked thru another opening & this is effected directly by the float level. So if you have no vac. leaks float level is my guess. see link for further clarification.

Did you do two compression checks, one with it at running temp and one when its cold? With the carb @ WOT?

What kind of cam is in the engine? Maybe your lifters are giving you problems?

Pull your rocker shafts and check to see if all the valves line up without big gaps.

You can run propane around the intake and check for leaks. If it sucks in the propane the rpm's will increase.

Have you checked fuel pressure? We had a fuel pump eccentric bolt loosen up and the car would start, but not run at times. Sometimes if it caught, it would actually idle, but would not run when in gear. Pull the pump and look at the arm first. See what kind of shape it is in. If that looks normal, check the fuel pump eccentric. It may be heavily grooved, or the bolt may have backed out. Good Luck

Cody I don't know to be happy or sad for you. Seriously I hope you get this starightend out. But at the same time I was looking at the car when you were... I think by now I'd have packed it full of C-4 and KABOOM!!!!

Cody,  I was thinking,  When you put on your intake, did you tighten the bolts side to side, starting in the middle?  Unless you have seen a manifold bolt tightening sequence diagram, you may not know of the proper order and created a vacuum leak.  If you tighten all on one side first, it happens. If you start on the ends, it does it.

Thanks for all ideas and help.  The article on the basics of carbs was great!

When I get this car done it will be 10 times better than when I got it.   I just hate to cut corners and I'm not willing to do that with this vehicle.  So the engine will be getting a new cam, valve springs and some minor improvments to make it very dependable and drivable when it's done.  :woohoo:

Any chance you got some bad gas? How many tanks have you been through since this started?

That ran through my mind early on, however the car has ran good on the tank that is in there.  This is just a running to rich issue right now.  I have to figure out why it's running so rich.  The carb will not get down to an idle, so it's hard to do much vacuum testing.

The back two plugs are the ones giving me the trouble.  Within 10 min of running at 1,600 RPM they are completely covered in black (not oil) and will not fire very good.

I called Holley and they gave me a few ideas and things to check.  Early signs are looking very good!

Holley finally ran out of things to have me buy and replace.  The carb went back today to be flow checked and tested.  We'll see what they say when they get it on their bench.  :clueless:
