340ci Stroker Kits - WTB?
« on: September 05, 2006 - 10:25:47 PM »

WTB = Where's The Best and Where To Buy?  :dunno:

I saw an advert in Mopar Muscle Magazine for Huges Engines, what are their products like? This is what I would be wanting, a complete kit like this: http://www.hughesengines.com/partDetail.asp?partID=12673&eTypeID=1

My 340ci has W2 heads, Comp Cam (20-224-4) 230 @ 0.50, 110 degree lobe centers, .488" intake valve lift, .491" exhaust valve lift, Intake and headers all port matched. Hi Vol sump and pump. Estimated around 350-360hp.

Are they and would it be worth it? Would being a "daily/weekly driver" damaged the engine or put stress on it with 450hp+. What about idle, would that shoot through the roof and be too lumpy for street driving?

I was looking at a Shaker Hood set up but for that money I'd rather spend it on performance, over looks.
$4,000 could buy 2 nearly 3 stroker kits, so, IMO it would be crazy to get a Shaker set up. Besides I have a high rise manifold and although it would fit after some mods I just can't see the point other than appearance.

Thanks for any help given. A 500hp+ 340ci would be quite tasty. lol  :lol2:

Cheers,

Cool, thanks Neil.

My heads should go well with a stroker kit to egg them on eh? I've heard they are a great head, almost as good as an Edelbrock aluminum head, so I've heard. Good thing with a kit is it's all there and all tested.

So, are the Hughes Engine kits any good? I'm going all the way with a 416ci kit.  :bananasmi
They have upgrade options like Forged Crankshafts from K1 Technologies/Mopar Performance, Forged Pistons from Keith Black/Probe/Diamond, "H" Beam Connecting Rods from K1 Technologies/CAT/Eagle, Clevite Bearings, Crankshaft key, Harmonic Damper/Balancer from BHJ or Pro/Race and B M Flexplate.

I'm definitely going a head with this, can't wait!!

How about these combos? http://www.rpmmachine.com/340-416-chrysler-stroker.shtml
Using the colour chart and prices, seem good Neil?

NZ, I have used Hughes Engines along time ago . What I have heard lately I don't like. Customer service has suffered. Dave Hughes knows his stuff, the Duster race car we were running ran within 1/10th(10.49)  of where he predicted it would run, it is the other parts of running a business that I think the problem is at. :dunno:

I've built a few of them. Only one was a kit. Customer supplied from Mancinin Racing. It used a Callies Dragonslayer crank, Eagle H beams, and Diamond pistons. I was very happy with it. The others I pieced together using MP cast crank. I would buy a kit from hughes if they dont actually unbox anything. I dont trust thier machining or customer service anymore. AS far as hints. Measure everything. Callies and MP have always been spot on. Scat, Eagle, and Ohio Crank parts have been known to have issues. (kind of weird, because I think Scat or Eagle makes the MP ones...) Stay away from Scat rods, or check them well, after properly cycling them. I wont use Eagle SIR rods for anything. I'd rather have stock rods with ARP bolts in mild applications. I dont external balance. It's a factory production procedure that isnt very good, it's just good enough. Forged cranks will balance easily, cast ones will need mallory to internal balance. Dont use anything but a quality forged piston. The piston speeds with a 4" arm are too fast for anything else, even in low rpm (under4K) applications. Youer heads are better than Edelbrocks. How much better depends on the porting. W2s are a better head right out of the box, but more pricey. Your cam, intake and carb will act much smaller with the 4" arm. Cams under about 230° @ .050 generally idle very nicely, and pull a ton of vaccum.

WOW! Thanks lads, awesome info, above my head but I can still roughly gather what you're talking about. lol  :icon16:

Perhaps I should get Chryco or similar to create a kit to suit my engine. Like brand names and part numbers of the parts needed, then I could go to the one shop and buy them, though, I'm sure this will cost a lot more $$$ than a kit.

I agree with most of this , I am not a fan of Hughes
I have been to muscle motors & talked to Eric in person , he has always treated me well & should be able to put together a great kit for you
The W2 heads are definatly better then the Ebrocks
Mopar rods & a new set of bolts should be plenty for what you need
Diamond /Ross/ JE, Wiseco  pistons  are all good

Thanks Chryco, I've decided to get a quote with possibly New Zealands best engine builder, Eric Livingstone.
Well know in New Zealand for his engine builds. Built to haul and built to last...a do it once do it right builder.

Just to add a few things - Hughes has done some testing so these builds are good estimates of what to expect I believe.   There is info on their website.  Comp Cams also has some dyno build articles on their site.  I'm running the Hughes 228 hydraulic roller cam which idles with 12" of vacuum and makes very nice power from 2500 rpm up.  They estimated 460 hp+ with my combo which I believe.  If I had to build another 408 I would go with stock rebuilt rods or H beam and skip the I beams.  Definitely check every running clearance as these kits are not bolt together (just see some of my 408 engine posts)  I would also get the block deck finished for MLS head gaskets (Cometic) and skip the FelPro's if you go to aluminum heads.
