Rust hole in fuel tank. How to repair?

I'd just replace it, the cost of repair and using an old tank isn't worth the hastle. As others have stated, not worth the risk to weld it yourself if you aren't an expert. My wifes uncle who was an expert died from burns he sustained in a gas tank explosion he was repairing. He had done it a hundred times before. The inert purge is good and I've heard of them boiling them too but as stated, not worth the hastle or the risk.

I didn't have any rust holes, a lot of pitting on top, but there was a previous repair on the bottom, done in lead, looking from inside it looks like a stress crack, buy the time I cleaned this thing up, por15'd the outside & then painted, sealed the inside  I bet I have 30 hours & 65 to 75 bucks in material & it looks "ok" at best, i had everything but the sealer laying around,so I gave it a try, if it lasts great, if not I wasted a ton of effort so I'd say go new if there's any way you can! when i got my charger last year (a 72) i couldnt find a decent tank for under $400, +the sending unit @$125. so i took it to a local shop who cleaned it out (it was plugged up not rotted out) and coated it. cost me like $120 cuz they coated it twice, normal price is $60 or so.

chryco, your nuts! i saw a guy set off a big fire cracker in a gas tank one time. he did it in a field and had a long fuese, but it split the tank open like a clam, an launched it about 20 feet in the air!! shook my house about 400 feet away! your lucky to have survived the propane tortch trick. gasoline fumes are not to be played with! filling with watter is safe, dont know that i would even trust inert gas to remove all the oxygen (i cant see that its gone).

  The tank in my Coronet had a "pinhole reapired years ago" according to the original owner i bought the car from. On the second fill-up i realized the hole (that had come back or maybe it married and had some baby pinholes) was probably located on the top area of the tank as after a couple of miles the fast drip ceased. Between that and a false reading on the gas gauge there will be some new parts in the R/T's near future. Until then she will sit as i get the coins gathered. I would love to drive that big 440 as is but it's not safe so sit she will until i am ready to replace things

Again, thanks for the input.  Yeah I guess those reapired leaks can haunt you.

I'll get a new tank eventually, but the old one....a big firecracker, eh?
