Air Gap intake clearance

I'm looking at getting a Performer Air Gap intake for my 340 Cuda (with rally hood) and I have some concerns about the clearance to the hood. Has anyone here run this intake on their Cuda with a normal Holley carb, and if so have you had any clearance issues with the stock rally hood?

Well heres a 'for what its worth post'. I have a Performer RPM intake on my 318 (which is the exact same height as a AirGap), Edelbrock carb and a moroso Drop Base air cleaner with a 14x3" filter and it clears my FLAT hood. Rallye hood i think has another inch or clearance over a Flat i believe...

in short, it depends what filter/base setup you run, it'll clear..

 Get a drop down base, I use a K&N one on my Challenger with a Holley DP and it sits down nice and low without any problems.

I have the non-airgap RPM on my 360 in my Challenger with r/t hood.  I do not have a drop base and my air filter cannot be more than 2 inches tall, but it does fit.

  I have the performer air gap rpm manifold with a 770 holley  on my 340 cuda with the ralleye hood. I put a K&N 14x3 (stock base) on and it was just a little to tall  so I went to 14x3 with a dropped base and it fits with no problem.

Thanks for the input everyone! I picked up the RPM airgap while I was at Monster Mopar and if I can now find the time to install it I'll post my findings on what the clearance is (or is not) in my application. I just looked at the air cleaner I'm running right now and its a drop-base with a 3" element so I should be ok

as mentioned i fit a performer rpm, which is the same height as a airgap, under my FLAT hood with just a drop base air cleaner...the rallye hoods have about a full inch more clearance than the flat hood i have. It should fit with no issue.

Do you know the model number of the K&N assembly? I just replaced my 318 with a 340 with an Air Gap manifold and am having hood clearance problems with my Moroso drop base air cleaner. I'd like to fix it right once (or twice) and would appreciate the input. I am using a Holley 670 Street Avenger aith the Air Gap intake. Thanks!

Like the others said, it should fit under the hood. I have Edelbrocks fuel injection system on my 318. I believe the manifold is a Super Victor, which I think is taller than the Air-Gap. I have a FLAT hood and  it barely fits under the hood. So you should not have a problem.

Hey G-man,
Early style 318-340-360 intakes were built with no gap under the runners totally different to that of a big block.  Know how big block intakes do not have a plate to close in the valley area and small blocks do have the plate intergrated into the intake.  New style small block and some of the older small intakes (single plain) had what is called an air-gap and this area under the intake is what determines an air-gap intake.
But in saying all that, Edelbrock have a Duel plain intake that is called an Air-gap as it also has the air-gap under the runners.

the Big Block Dodge , early Hemi & pontiac engine were all designed with a cover plate on the block & intake runners raisedcreating the air gap to transmit less heat to the intake

To know how much room you have now, roll up balls of playdough and put them on your air filter, then close the hood. The playdough stays in the shape it was squished so you can measure your distance to the hood. Also, a 2 inch air filter may be hurting performance. I'd say a 3x14 K&N type is a minimum. Also, it's not expensive to have an eighth or quarter inch milled off the top of an intake, though you will probably find the right drop base. You can do other things like grind the inner flange of the drop base. By using playdough, and making a lot of minor Mods, I fit a 4x14 K&N in a Ram Air Box on my 72 Cuda.

Thank you all for the responses. It seems my main problem with the drop base is clearing the choke, but with all the suggestions, I think I'll get the situation figured out. And also, it's been years and years since I've had a reason to buy playdough! Happy Holidays.
