Paint Brands - which one?
« on: September 08, 2006 - 02:25:23 PM »
please help me pick a paint... I dont know what I am doing..

My buddy Dave is going to paint my car for free and has given me the part #'s of some expoxy primer to buy so that I can coat the underside of my hood and body panels to keep them from rusting and prepping for basecoat / clear coat...

Anyway... Dave said to get PPG and asked me to get DP60LF with the appropriate hardener and a bunch of reducer. However - after talking with another friend of mine (who also paints cars) he says that is the "el cheap" version that PPG sells. He recommended I buy the global line of urethane based primers and paints. He called a PPG dealer here in town and they agreed with him. The "Global" line of paints is 220/gal. for primer though!

Anyone PLEASE point me in the right direction!

Use PPG for paint and clear. I used Vasplar and it was ok but does not lay as nice. I also used Omni clear on another car and it is harder to spray. PPG is the easiest in my opinion for guys who don't paint. It cost more but you save time not sanding and buffing orange peel.

I always use the PPG Paint.  I would use the paint that is to the level of your cars body restoration.  In other words I would not go with the best paint over a car that has temporary (bondo) bodywork.  If the car is done right use the best quality of paint you can afford.  It will last the longest and pay off in the long run with looks and durability.

I agree with you guys... I am /was more so a little while ago about which paint system to use.. i.e. Omni, Delstar/Delcrylic, Deltron, Deltron 2000 or Global.

My car is going to be pretty nice... I will post pics of the progress so far soon... think R/T 440-6 Shaker Clone...

So far I am leaning toward epoxy DP60LF since its compatible with almost all their other BC/CC paints.. then I am prolly gonna go with the Deltron or Deltron 2000 paints - these are a little easier to lay down and have a proven track record.

more opinions welcome...

I have been using PPG paint for  10+ years but have never heard of thier Global line.I use the Deltron base/clear for most everything, the clear is 2002 I think and holds up perfectly well.I painted my `cuda 8-9 years ago and don`t polish or wax it near as much as I should but it still looks great.Thier DP epoxy primers are also very good and should be more than good enough for your car.

i don't think it really matters all that much...both dupont and PPG make pretty much same quality product.  I painted my 79' Scout II with dupont, it looks great, we painted our 77' Scout II with PPG, it looks great.  Both are good brands, my suggestion though is once you start with 1 brand, finish with that brand so you dont need to cross reference paint color codes or reducer/catalyst/thinner ??? just makes it easier at the paint store!

thanks for all your responses... I am going to go with the PPG Deltron paint line... starting off with DP60LF epoxy and finishing with a good BC/CC...I just got freaked out a bit because the paint booth is open this weekend and I have an opportunity to do some primer so I can mount all the panels and start mounting the panels for block sanding and prepping the engine bay..

more questions - but I will start another thread.  :2thumbs:

I am using PPG Shop-Line products. The guy painting my car is one of the best in northern california, and he said that only to use epoxy if you are going to paint over it within 3 days, otherwise you have to respray it. Use a urethane surfacer if the car is goin to be more than a few days before you spray. He is also going to spray a sealer over the entire car before we lay down color. Just my two cents though. I'll let you know how the car comes out in the next couple of days.

It will definately be more than 3 days before we paint... David mentioned spraying another light coat after all the blocking is done and any imperfections are handle with glaze.... he said that it was important for adhesion.

is there any special prep that must be done when if you have to respray it before BC???

DP epoxy is designed for bare metal and acts to seal the metal from oxygen and keep it from rusting. It's non-pourous and not designed to be sanded. There is an ongoing debate about putting filler on bare metal or on top of the DP. PPG latest instruction is to put filler on top of the DP. DP doesn't sand well at all, making a bit tough to feather in the filler, but it can be done. You can use a sandable primer or high-build primer on top of the filler and DP to get the car ready to block. You can then lay DP sealer on top of all that, but you would wait until the day you are going to shoot color. Once DP sets up, you have to scuff prior to laying down the next layer. The original layers of DP will be entirely scuff before you go to the high-build!

I didn't know that they offered a "higher grade" of epoxy primer. DP has a great reputation as a great product.

Hey guys,PPG has many different brands under their name.Global is a very good brand but it is also the most expensive line that they offer.Basicly you go with what you can really afford.I have been painting for 20 years now and have used many different paint lines. You can easily spend $1500.00 just on paint materials(primer, base and clear)when doing full restoration.Look carefully at your budget and do you plan on keeping the car long term.If this is a keeper then spend the money on quality paint.Dp60lf is a good product and technically you are suppose to do body filler work on top of epoxy then spray on a high build filler over that.If the panel is preped out properly then the use of a sealer is optional.I do not like to use sealer but that is entirely up to the painter.I painted my 71 Charger R/T back in 1990 in Glasurit european paint line used on BMW's.I sprayed single stage green (FJ6 Green Go)let it dry for a day scuffed it down with 1000 grit then sprayed 4 coats of clear over the color. It has been 16 years now and the paint still looks like it was sprayed yesterday.Do the work properly with quality material and take care of the paint and it will last you a long time.Any questions e-mail me at berna4406@yahoo.com

Thats for all your responses... I decided to use the DP and the results were good.. after talking with the paint dealer he told me that after 1 week I am going to have to scuff up anything that I want to BC/CC, so using a different product was no time saver. I am going to glaze any surfaces that might need a little more attention and then scuff and reseal with reduced DP before BB/CC.. it is a little more work but that should ensure proper adhesion and a uniform primer coat so that my basecoat wont have any light spots. Sound right?

this is what I did this weekend...
