Gas Cap
« on: September 11, 2006 - 05:43:18 PM »
I purchased a cap for under my flip top gas cap but it does not fit. Was the gas cap for the 70 Challenger different from the others? Was it a one year only?
Its an L.A. car with all the emission stuff on it does that make a difference as to what will fit?

the 70 was different in that it was the only year with a vented cap , but any year should fit under the flip top , the filler neck was probably different too though

From memory the filler neck has a larger opening from 1971 on.

Give me a minute and I will take a photo of my 1970 cap and post it.......

I have a feeling that the Calif. Emission System locking gas cap will be a hard one to find

The original 1970 part numbers are;

Without ECS - 3404 670

With ECS - 3404 667

Best of luck with the search, they are hard to find.

I have a regular Stant locking gas cap (bought at Auto Zone or Advance, can't remember) beneath the flip-top on my '73.

 Thanks Mike, I'm trying to keep it all original so I'll start looking for the original piece 3404 667. I've got over a year before I will need to worry about putting gas in my tank.

Here is what I've found, I have a 70 Challenger I just bought from CA I too wanted to use the flip gas cap. I've read that CA  emissions cars and 1971 had an "oddball cap" How you tell is, if the slots in the filler neck are around 1/4"  ( as mine is) then you use the 71 and CA emissions cap. All the rest the slots are about 7/16" to 1/2 " wide.
I just came back from my local jobber with a Gates cap #31723 . It fits great but I'm not sure if it's vented or not? It was all dusty so it had been on his shelf quite awhile but it looks like the bottom  ( second) listing below
I found both on E-bay if this helps?
