Wiring harness questions
« on: September 13, 2006 - 10:55:26 AM »
I am putting my dash back together, with a M&H wiring harness that I just bought. I have a couple questions on what may be clear to others, but not to me. I'll start off by saying that I laid the new harness down, right next to the old and everything seems to be in about the same position and there are no missing or added plugs or junctions. My questions are about the actual plugs and what they mate to on my non rally dash, '73 A/C Barracuda. This is kinda lengthy and I'll apologize for that now.

I have one plug that I think goes to the dash light dimmer switch but I am not sure. On my old harness, there was a looped jumper between two contacts in a plug that I think is meant to bypass the dimmer switch. I know the jumper was not factory, because of the crimpons that were used. The actual plug with this jumper is grey, with three plug-ins in it. The wiring to the plug includes 2 yellow wires, 2 black with yellow trace wires and one brown or tan wire. Again, I think that this plug is for my dimmer, but I can't be sure because it was already hanging loose (with the jumper) when I pulled the dash. With this same regard, I can only assume that my dimmer switch is bad but I would like to try to confirm that. Anyone have ideas as to how I can check the dimmer before installation of the dash? Right now, it is all laying on a table in my basement.

Second question: I have a AM radio in my car that didn't work when I bought it. There was no wires hooked up to it, but I think that I have localized that plug. The one I think it is is grey, with twp plug ins. The wiring to the plug includes one black wire, one red with white trace wire and 2 orange wires. If this is the radio plug, can anyone tell me which of the wires are hot and which are ground? I am probably going to tap into that plug to install the new glove box stereo that I plan on installing. I plan on leaving the old radio in for the look.

Finally, and I can only blame myself for this, I have forgotten how or where to route the orange wire that feeds the three lights on the dashboard light bar. I don't want to pinch or wear anything once I reinstall the dash pad and I don't have the slightest idea as to how it looked when I pulled it. I know; pictures. I took a ton for the actual dash and harness area. I didn't take any though of my disassembly of the dash / lightbar/ dashpad.

Thanks..................

corrct for the dimmer colors!!! yellow for dome light(switch must be grounded to work it) tan- to the fuse panel for lighting, black is power feed from the headlight sw.

radio
the red wire is +12 volts from the run of the ign switch
org is the wire for the bulb for the dash/dimmer switch

Thanks for that info. Does anyone else know of a good way to check the dash light dimmer switch for function while it is out of the car?
