A little late to the party here, but do we use that thingamabob at registration where they have the highly distorted pictures of numbers and letters which you have to type in? Its been quite a while since I registered, and the forum software has changed since then...

No. Our software doesn't have that option yet. We have three levels of registration security to choose from.

1. Open registration, where there is absolutely no restriction. This is what we have used for the past 5 years. Worked just fine until recently.

2. Member Activation, is what we are currently using. When a person registers, the system will send the person an email that they will have to respond to in order to activate their registration. This has caught many, many spammers in the net who don't "activate".

3. Member Approval, is what we're trying to avoid. This would require the administrators to actually approve each and every person who wants to register on the board. This would be time consuming for us and probably very frustrating to those who are trying to register if we are not available for a while to approve them.

Sorry for the long winded explanation, but that's where we stand.

I think changing to this has helped greatly.

I agree! However 2 or 3 have been tenacious enough to follow through with the activation and post on our board.

But it's much better than it was and you guys are so quick to rat them out, they don't get very much air time here!

We have a small town north of here named Plymouth, been there many times, If I got pulled over the sherriff could say "Get out of Plymouth". I'd ask him which one sir? The car or the town? LOL The sound of the gun is the last thing I remember.

I guess we just have to be diligent about ratting out and kicking off these slimy, good-for-nothing, low-life, scumbags, until they learn that it's useless. Personally, I think that a couple of public executions would slow it down tremendously. LOL.

By the way, at work, we use something called a Barracuda (How fitting is that?). It somehow monitors the internet traffic and removes all of the spam email. It updates itself every hour automatically, to handle new threats. It's too bad that they don't have something like that for online forums (Maybe they do, I don't know).

Ross and I have been approving/rejecting, by hand, individuals who have registered for the forum. Since we've been doing that we haven't had any spammers. Some of the names of the applicants are just obvious of their intentions, others I've been googling their id names and/or their email address and either find other mopar related items and approve them, or find that they are spamming other forums and reject them. We're up to about 20-25 spammers a day now, so I think it's a necessity we continue doing this.

Laura, I typed a really long email on this subject but managed to delete it. Whoops! That's what I get for doing things really late at night that require attention to detail. Anyway, I can tell you where most of this is coming from and some ways to stop it (but not completely... yet). I can assure you that very, very few of these spammers are actual humans - it's all automated. With that being the case, the "capcha" (funny looking pictures) and email verification can be bypassed. Look in the error logs and you'll see the registration, login, and first post all follow a pattern.

Hee hee, I'm blocking 40-50 attempts and only have to "manually" inspect 2 or 3.
