Radiator overflow...
« on: September 14, 2006 - 10:12:17 PM »
Are 70 Challys supposed to have radiator overflow bottles? Stopped at a buddiy's place to show him the Chally and she left a mark in the driveway, Not alot, not overheatng (according to the guage anyway) maybe an ounce or 2, Then I get her home and she does the same thing in the garage. Do I have it overfilled and it needs to "level off" or what? Thanks
BTW radiator is 3 core w shroud. Guage is not on the "high" side
70 Chally R/T Convertible- Yes she's really got a HEMI, no she's not a Charger!

Not sure if they are "correct" or not but it won't hurt not having one, just messier. I'd get one if I were you. You won't have it overfilled, as it is it's suppose to be right up level with the beginning of the opening neck. Just when it heats up it needs to go somewhere, either on your floor or into the bottle and back again.

I had the same problem with my 318 Challenger.  I just rigged up a overflow bottle and the mess stopped.

I have ran cars with the water level in the rad right at the top of the core,it leaves room for exspansion.Run a mech. gauge and compare it to the stock reading so you have a good idea what the gauge is reading.

HO70...I'd love to see pics of how your stock '70 overflow looks and where it's mounted.
Thanks

The 1970 cars did not come with overflow bottles. The level of coolant should be just over the top of the core. If you overfill it, it will go out the overflow until it drops to a level it is happy with.

Thanks Barry. Now that I got her running real good  :burnout:
{amazing what rebuilt carbs, new tank,sending unit,pump,canister,filter and lines do for a 440-6 car:}

...and holding her oil  :pullinghair: (dang valve covers)

I think I'll get on the conversion of the washer bottle into a overflow reservoir.
I've been waiting for the level to reach it's "no-puke" level, but she seems to always have more.

I'm gonna see if I can make the stock electric reservoir style work.
If I can't I'll swap it for a manual foot pump style...that should work right?

Like this..

overflow line will have to be routed down under radiator and up to this reservoir.
I'll have to vent the cap...it'd be nice have an overflow tube out of the top of it. hmmmm....

What do you all think?

I know :horse: :horse: :blah: :2thumbs: I move slowly on some of these things.

Don't know about this from personal exp. but it appears there was a true overflow for the later models

Hey Goody...I'd like to get the cap with hose attachment (or @ least the diameter) to see if it would work on my new squirter bottle top.

On the later model one you linked to, they specifically don't list the 1970, but does anyone know if that later model overflow will fit in a '70?  ?
