1973? Challenger Circle Track Car
« on: September 15, 2006 - 07:32:21 AM »
I am ready to sell my once used circle track car, yes I only raced it once. When the car got completed the track closed and it was run the one time. The car was built for asphalt but could obviously be changed for dirt. The car started out as a "fairly sound" gutted shell, but full of pin holes. The front frame rails were plated with steel to strengthen them, as we weren't allowed to have a cage forward of firewall. A radiator support was fabricated from 0.060 box tubing as the original was cut off, uses standard big wide B-body radiators and has a shroud for cooling. The car has 1 1/2 x 3? x 1/8" subframe connectors to keep the car from twisting. Front and rear bumpers are reinforced. Battery is in stock location. The cage is 6 points with 2 points going to the hump at the rear firewall. The cage has 4 door bars on drivers and 3 on passenger and are tied into the rocker panels, and is 1 3/4" bar. The windshield 1/8" Lexan, has a cheap tach, oil, water, and volt gages, along with water and oil pressure warning lights. The steering wheel is stock style w/ quick disconnect and an aluminum racing seat and fuel cell shut off, window net, and 5 point harness. The suspension of the car is "stock", with front lower arms braced and with nylon bushings, and upper arms have off set bushings to get camber, with front disc brakes. shocks all around are summit 3 way adjustable oval track shocks. Car has sway bars adapted from a late model police car both front and rear. The rear suspension I used a narrower late model 8 1/4 rear end to help plant the right rear on exit and the rear has 3.55 posi, shimmed so it works like a spool. There are 5 leaves on the left and 4 on the right to also allow bite up off the corner. Car has a 16 gallon fuel cell mounted in essentially the stock location. The last part is the engine, as much money, care and time was taken with that too. It is a 1975 360 block bored and honed with deck plates to be 0.100 over and then stuffed with 73-74 340 0.060 over pistons, this makes a 378 cu in 10.5:1 motor using original parts. The crank is std std and the rods were resized and have ARP fasteners. Entire rotating asembly was balanced and uses std 360 flywheel and balancers. The heads are what else but the legendary X-Heads which were all done over but no porting done. The cam is Sig Erson (I think) and is a .465 lift cam, we were supposed to run stock ones, so I cheated, and uses a double row roller chain. The intake is a stock 340 CI piece w/ thermoquad, and the engine still sports stock CI exhaust manifolds and its street duals, never got around to changing that. The ignition system is a stock 340 electronic ignition distributor and box. The tranny is just a stock 904 (I think) with the stock floor mounted slap stick shifter. The wheels that are on/come with the car are the heavy duty 15x7 police wheels (some people call them ralley's ha) painted big bad mopar green like lower part of body. The car is Big bad green bottom and Petty blue (I mixed the colors I had laying around to make a light blue) on the top. Paint needs touching up from sitting for a couple of years.

Plans were to change the exhaust, use a racing oil pan, and add an oil cooler, but with no place to race I have lost interest. Oh yeah the power steering leaks some where, I can't remember of it is the pump or box or hose but I was going to go manual any ways. Don't email me and say how could I have done that I have heard that enough, the car wasn't restorable, it wasn't collectable and it was stripped. Car could be used for cricle track or with some work make a show car out of it or modify it for vintage racing.

Asking price is $5,000 will consider some partial trades like 14' enclosed trailer, scales for racing karts, yes we went to racing go karts instead. Yes I know the scams so the standard no out of country no money orders and send back rest yada yada yada. I like cash in hand!!! You know the saying money talks bull.... walks.

Any questions email me at gdefoe@twcny.rr.com

I am located, as is the car, in upstate NY about 1 hr north of Syracuse.

Obviously #1 choice was a complete unit but, will consider seperating. Hey 378, 366 close, can' sneak it through? Thats OK we had a "stock" rule, whatever that meant. We had guys running mid '80's Monte's and Malibu's with 350's and one guy had a 327.

Let me know when ready to talk and I'll think about price and see if there is interest in motor.

Is anyone interested in motor if this gentleman buys just body.

I get the crap locally mainly. Here in NNY bodies are an issue, but I also think those that say that are the ones who have never tried to restore much less just make presentable and road worthy a rusted shell.
