Letting off some steam
« on: September 17, 2006 - 07:11:26 PM »
Hi guy's and girls, this post is just me letting off some steam.Last weekend I had my 69 barracuda at a big show up at lake george. On friday night was messing around with a mustang and a camaro and my fan twisted two blades at about 7000 rpm's and wiped out my radiator. The next day I was able to get another radiator and fan(cheap china crap)Got everything in started to fill and a leak appeared.I stayed calm but decided to leave the car on the trailer and go and enjoy the rest of weekend.Came home on monday, pulled the radiator out cleaned it and solderd the pinhole.Put everything back together no leaks, took it for a quick ride and came home. That's when I spotted some trans.fluid dripping.I jack the car up and find its comming from the bellhousing. So I pull the trans out replace the front seal and put it back together.Guess what it's not the seal thats leaking because I fired it up and its still leaking.Talk about just wanting to go out and kick the dog.So needless to say I just pulled the trans back out.-------the Clown

I can relate as I've been under my Cuda adjusting the shifter linkage for about 3 hours today. I think the shifter unit is needing to be rebuilt but want to wait till winter gets here as I don't know how long hurst will take to rebuild it.

Hang in there Clown.  Eventually your "two steps forward, three steps back", will change and you'll get one good "ten steps forward and 1 step back" to catch up.  :grinyes:

Just to give you a heads up! 9 out of ten times when a 727  is leaking out of the front it is not the front seal. It is something making the front seal leak( bad pump bushing, cracked converter hub, worn converter hub etc.) Air check ( pressurize with air ) your converter with it out of the trans. Pump needs to be pulled out of the trans and inspected.

Thanks guys.I will push on thats for sure.74 chall--the Lake George show was awsome and after the replacement radiator showed that leak,It was beer time after that.Hey tactransman got a question for you,I am running a 904 with a low 1st and 2nd gearset full manual and a 2800 converter.I am wondering if this might have happened from hauling the car on a trailer. The reason I ask is because this leak didnt show up till after I got home and repaired the radiator. And the only person I can blame is myself because I bound the car down. Thanks for your help -------------------------------------the Clown

No , it is not from hauling it. :grinno:
If it is a 904 , you got a 90 percent chance that the converter hub is cracked. :grinyes:

I looked the hub over and used a magnifying glass but don't see any cracks. What do you use to plug and pressure the converter.Would a rubber expansion plug fitted with an air fitting be what I need to use.Sorry for all the questions,I really appreciate you helping me out. This might be another tell tale sign of what's broken, after I replaced the seal and put the trans back in.It took quite awhile to get the trans to go into gear,Like it leaked down.-----the clown

I put a blow gun in the hub and cover it tightly with a shop towel. It is primitive but it works. No more pressure than you can hold in with a rag should be enough.
Look real close at the weld around the bottom of the hub while you are putting air to it..
