Help or advice for my 1971 Hemi Cuda
« on: September 17, 2006 - 10:55:09 PM »
My story. In 1971 I bought a Hemi cuda. It is hemi orange in color with a 4-speed transmission. It has black leather seats and electric windows. The engine only ran good back then on Sunoco 260 gas. Other premium gas would cause the engine to diesel when the ignition was shut off. I went away to college and did not drive the car very much. The car was difficult to drive in city traffic because it would not idle smooth and when it finally hit the rpm where the cam was working the tires would spin. The car was very touchy with tremendous torque. Even in 4th gear on the road when I kicked the 2nd four-barrel in the tires would spin. It became very difficult to get gas for it. I used to go to the airport to get gas and add lead additive. Finally, I put the car in storage and only ran the engine once in awhile. The car has about 10K miles on it.  Several years back the car would no longer start. I put oil in all the cylinders and do spin it over once in a while.

I need some advice. I probably need to get the 2 four barrel carbs rebuilt after all these years what is the best place to get the parts for it? The air cleaner is original but is very big if I need a new one are they available? If I need any rubber hoses or other parts does mopar have them or where do you restoration guys go for parts? All the parts on the car now are original even the tires which still are holding the air from 1971.

If I get the car to run again gas is going to be a big problem. What do you guys do for gas for these old cars? I could replace the valves with the new hardened valves that are available from Mopar and then I could run on unleaded gas but the car would not be original factory spec anymore.

Any advice would be appreciated.  What would you do with this car?

Welcome to cc.com!!  Sound like you made some good decisions with the car and now you have something alot of people would love to have . . . me included!!

I would have the carbs rebuilt and go through the fuel system to make sure everything is in working order!  Then I would looks around where you live to see what kind of fuel is available.  I have a station in my town that sells 110 racing fuel that would help and possibly check for lead additives . . these are available also!

Hmmmm HEMI orange with a 4 speed!!

Welcome to cc.com!  Hope you enjoy the site!!  Nice car!!

Hi and welcome to the site. Hemi orange is a great color and I bet it looks great on your 71 Cuda. I would rebuild the carbs and check out the entire fuel system even the gas tank for varnish that an cause many problems. Post some pictures when you an so we can all take a look at you Hemi Cuda. Is it a console 4-speed and rallye dash cuda? My 70 Hemi orange 340 4-speed cuda is a none console car.

There are guys around who can tweek hemis to run like champs on pump gas.  I have a friend who lives here near Chicago who has a beautiful orange hemi cuda that he drives often.  I think he has someone in southeast Wisconsin who works on the car for him.
Rather than try to get it running well yourself, I would recommend finding an expert.  If you post what area of the country you live in I think someone on the board could steer you toward a expert who can get your hemi running better than it ever has before!

JH27NOB, I am also in the Chicago area. I would like to find out whom your friend uses to work on the car.

As to the other questions, I was looking at the 1971 cuda brochure on the stock mopar site. My car looks much like the one on the first page of the brochure. It does not have the vinyl top on it. It does have the fog lights and other stuff you see on that car and is that hemi orange color. In the brochure I have the black leather seats shown as # D. It has the center console and the rally instrument cluster that goes way up in mph like 160 or 180 but I haven’t really looked at it for years. It has the upgraded AM-FM radio package that really did sound pretty good back then. Although, I used to listen to Larry Lujack on WLS AM radio station back in those days. It also has the wood Hurst shifter option that really shifts the 4-speed smoothly and looks cool with the chrome and wood trim on it.
It has the chrome rings around the wheels and when my car came in they forgot to put the chrome on one side of the car so I had to take it back to the dealer and have the parts installed. It also has the tire upgrade with the large white letters.  I ordered the car with the limited slip differential in it and it has the 4.10 rear end ratio. It has the racing mirror option and electric windows.

My father wanted me to buy a convertible. They were not popular back then for muscle cars because it added weight to the car. I even did not want the AC option on the car to save weight and not use up HP. My Dad said since I did not want to get the AC I had to get the electric windows on it. Boy did I make a mistake I should have got the convertible because they really are worth big money now. I really did not like the convertible because my first car was a 1965 corvair convertible spider with the 180 HP turbo charged engine. The nice thing about that car was all the chrome the General put on the engine.
I even have that car but that is another car story.

I was a "Super CFL" listener back then.  ;D
I just emailed my friend with the hemi cuda about the mechanic he uses to work on his car.  I will forward that information to you when I hear back from him.  He lives in Park Ridge but usually keeps his cars at his place in Lake Geneva.  He is a great guy and has a lot of great connections, so hopefully he can help you out. Your car sounds incredible!
I hope I get to see it some day!

I dont know, maybe I need a history lesson or I'm too young to really remember, but what was the deal with the whole leaded/unleaded thing. Yeah I know pollution but what was the impact on existing cars?

AC was not an option on   440-6 426 hemi's 340-6packs

If you did order a hemi and everyone else who had a hard top they wouldnt be as rare.

You have a sweet ride,  Id keep it as close to stock as humanly possible (survivor)

Very nice, what about the Corvair, my step dads father had a 4dr he special ordered with the 140 4 1bbls wishs he still had that.

The car is all original factory stock. Here are some pictures that are not to good because the car is in a shed with no windows. The darkness helps preserve the car.
