70 challenger Rt 440 6 pack
« on: September 18, 2006 - 06:22:46 AM »
Just got my car to the shop. As you can see from the pics (if I do them right) the car has been sitting for many many years. Matching #'s, Dana, and other options. So many original parts I kinda hate to take some stuff apart but of course I'm dying to dig in. Say my pics are too large. Even one pic!! Any help? Thanks

Hi grm.  You'll need to resize them to post them or you can email them to me at ll_davis@hotmail.com and I'll resize and post them here for you.

Wash it up good and hit the surface with turtle wax and its ready to  :burnout:

Looks rough but definately saveable with lots of work,  :2thumbs:

It definitely looks like it needs a bit of work, but it's also looks pretty complete, too.

Good luck with the rest of the project, and keep those pictures coming!

If this is an October build car (might be early looking at the trunk lid), I'd like to know the last 3 of the VIN - especially if it was on the 14th.  I have one and my buddy has VIN number one less.

before I tear it apart..440 6pack
« Reply #13 on: September 21, 2006 - 11:07:46 AM »
Have pics of my 70 challenger orig. 440 6 pack car on here already. Now before I take it all apart is there anything special I should do to help document the car. I have a partil build sheet, original title, and quite a bit of paperwork. The fact that it has been sitting for about 15 years shows that it has never been restored. Once a car looks brand new it loses that "wow, all original look". Lots of pics and anything else??? Thanks

Take photo's of:

The engine bearings (They were date coded)
Rod casting numbers (Look for paint inspection marks on the rods too)
Tops and bottoms of the pistons while still in the original bores
Cam - Any markings  or stampings you can find, especially on the ends
Oil pump pickup while installed
Keep track of what hole everything came from on all parts (lifters, pistons, etc,)
Valve springs while still on the heads (look for painted stripes)

Most important to me....TAKE ALLOT of photos of the external bolted on componants, valve covers, intake, water pump, exhaust manifolds, etc. for reference when you get back to assembling and detailing the engine, look for areas that got factory paint (or not) bolt head colors and markings/locations, and part numbers, date codes, casting numbers on small partsetc. it will help you a TON later on when re-assembling and detailing it.

None of this is really neccessary  because 90% of the parts are usually replaced in a top to bottom re-build, but it's cool trivia for a numbers guy like me.
