Reinstallation of the gas tank., Challenger 70 R/T S/E
« on: September 20, 2006 - 08:00:12 PM »
OK.  Everyone said that there are no silly questions.  Well I think I have one.  In putting the gas tank back on or trying to,  I had the filler tube mounted already.  I tried to hang the tank under the car and could not get the tube to line up enough to get it to slide into the tank. I took the tube loose and was still not able to get it to align.  I took the tube completely out of the car  and the tank out from under and inserted the tube.  No problem.  Can I feed the inserted  tube with the new  trunk seal up thru the opening in the trunk?  Or is there another way or the proper way that anyone knows?  Thanks in advance,  David :clueless: :clueless: :clueless:

How about leave the tube & seal loose but still in the trunk sticking thru the seal opening, as you raise the tank (with a floor jack on a palate) insert the tube into the grommet a little farther than it will be when finally installed. As you raise the tank re position the fill tube until tank is in the correct position. Kinda have to start with the tank a little left of center and work back toward the tube side.

you can lube the seal &/or install the tube after the tank is in place

Thanks guys.  I have thought more about the process and I think I can slide the floor seal up onto the tube, stick the tube more down thur the trunk, insert it into the tank and then start the positioning of the tank in place.   Above the tank I am using a rubber cushion material to keep metal off metal and am planning on using the same material to line the strap hangers.  Don't it  seem that some of what appears to be the simple jobs turn out to be some of the ones that give the most challenges? :pullinghair:

This is one job where someone helping is almost mandatory, big & bulky with tricky lineups etc.                                          GOOD LUCK OLD MAN.  :smokin:

Hello.............I got the tank installed.  Did it like I explained above.  And it was fairly simple and all by myself. Guess it just takes some time to think about the situation.   :bananasmi
