Challenger up and running again - way cool!
« on: September 20, 2006 - 09:29:15 PM »
Finally got the engine back in my Challenger again last week. Had to pull it ( with only 1500 miles on a balance and blueprint rebuild ) due the the d*mn FRAM oil filter basically disintegrating and putting all kinds of crap into the engine. Luckily no harm done to the engine or crank, though I did end up having to replace 1 of the pistons ( the skirt was burned on it, possibly due to detonation ), and we did put on all new crank bearings. Runs like a dream! Now I gotta make up for lost driving time ( problem showed up on July 4, adn that's a long time to go without ). Actually feels like the engine runs even stronger than before - I suppose you gotta get lucky once in awhile, huh?

Aren't the Mopar filters made by Fram these days?  There are better brands...

No, I don't believe so.

There are better brands...

Which ones?  :dunno:

I'm a few years out of date on the recommendations that came out on the MML, RAMM, and other lists, but Napa Gold were considered good, along with the premium Wix brand.  Purolator premiums were rated better than Fram.  Mobil1 filters are also supposed to be very good quality.  Fram was bottom of the pile, and I though I remembered someone disassembling Mopar filters and finding them identical to Fram; cheap very light construction, cardboard end caps on the element, flimsy valving, etc.

The only thing I use Fram for any more is to run crankcase cleaner through on the last run before engine teardown, and only because I still have a couple PH8A and PH43s purchased years ago.

I posted this link about oil filters in an earlier thread. http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilterstudy.html They performed a strictly unscientific review of readily available oil filters, simply noting how each is made of and constructed. You should check it out.

Sorry to hear about your filter problems unfortunately that is not the first time I have heard of a Fram failing. I hope all goes well for you from here on out.
