Electric Fuel Pump Recommendation
« on: September 24, 2006 - 05:56:42 PM »
I'm going to toss my mechanical pump set-up as the mickey mouse Hughes eccentric snout extension came loose (it's designed to extend the magnum cam snout so that it can drive the fuel pump eccentric).  I want something fairly quiet and would like to not have a regulator under the hood.  Anybody try the Holley gearrotor design pumps?  Any recommendations?  I need enough fuel for a 475 hp stroker small block.

I actually have used the holley for three or four vehicles.  I love the set up and have not required a regulator.  The electrics are pretty loud so I have insulated the pump from the frame rail with rubber.  I still have a little noise because the bolts go through the frame but it is not noticeable once the engine is running.  This set up also helped with a vapor lock problem I had with a 440.  I just switched the pumps and all the vapor lock went away and the engine ran great.

So which one is better?  Carter or Mallory.  I will gladly try these next although I havn't had any problems with holley, do you think that holley's are unreliable or inconsistent?

yup the Holley pumps seem unreliable , we installed 2 big Holley pumps on Kellys car & one failed right out of the box
 Mallory is better

The Mallory pump is also quiet. You won't even know it's on, even with the engine shut off.

Is there anybody who has a chart of recommended GPH requirements for the pump and line sizes based on engine size or HP ratings? Or is there a formula to calculate?

Thanks guys.  I bought a Mallory 140 today as the local speed shop recommended it for quietness and reliability.  Unfortunately price wasn't one of the good characteristics as the bill was over $400 with the regulator, fancy filter and a relay kit.  It is a gear type unit.  Apparently they have a whack of returned/failed Holley units and he referred to the Blue pump as a "wood chipper" due to the sound.

   :iagree:

I guess at that price, you HAVE to take a chance.  :grinyes: Heck, most electric fuel pumps are more than $100, and the regulators aren't cheap either.  :grinno:

Does anyone know what the Jeg's kit uses?  http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?storeId=10001&catalogId=10002&catalogIdentifier=Jegs_Direct&categoryId=85459&parentCategoryId=10307 It looks like Holley, but I don't know.  I'm leaning to the Mallory, if only for the noise factor.  Cost is a definite downer, though.

That Jegs kit isn't cheap either. Do you need all of that? I went with the Mallory and couldn't believe how quiet it was, but the street version was supposed to put out 6-8 PSI, and my gauge measured 11. So I went with a regulator to calm it down. I have since gone back to a mechanical fuel pump, but I loved the Mallory. Here is a link to what I had. http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=MAA%2D4110&N=700+4294925239+115&autoview=sku

Would this pump be good enough for a small block with 500+ hp?
