1971 challenger stripe V7W?
« on: October 01, 2006 - 09:46:42 AM »
I cannot for the life of me find a picture of this stripe. I am in the process of painting my car its original butterscotch color and want to put the factory stripe back on, can anyone help with some information about this stripe? Thanks.

After reading some other threads I am starting to gather that maybe it was white pinstriping, not a stripe.

I did some quick looking and saw that it was available in 69 also . . . . and all were white.  :dunno:

 V7 is painted pinstripe, and W is white. Here is a '71 with the V7X (black) stripe;

You can see the engineering drawing for this stripe at this link;

Cool, thanks. Is that a Butterscotch Challenger in the pic? My car was optioned just like that except that it had a white top and interior. Thanks again for the information.

the location on a 70 Challenger is different lookslike.

Same V7W coded stripe below on my 70 (9-'69) car..   Survivor body paint, fender tagged and its a painted stripe.

   I noted your document was 10-10-69 ?

As far as I can tell with the 70 pinstripe to compare to that both pinstripes mirror their respective years sport stripes. The 70 is below bodyline just like a longitudinal stripe and the 71 is at the top of the fender and ends right at the quarter window like the R/T-non R/T stripes. Thanks for the replies, this really answered some questions.

Yes, the stylists worked on the upcoming models well ahead of time. Some of the 1970 engineering drawings are dated 1968.

Cool, never knew they came with pin stripes like that. I really need to sit down for a week and re-study my option fender tag codes.....I'm sure I'm getting worse the more I learn. lol  :lol:

By the way, bb71challenger, well done on restoring the car to it's original condition. Some people would hack it or put bulge hoods on and Cragars and paint it Plum Crazy or something, bravo to you mate. I love factory original!!

Keep in mind those dates.  The print is only as good as the last revision date.  For example a print dated 10-10-69 make be totally different, cancelled or superceeded on 10-11-69.

It took  LOOOOOOOOOONG time to decide to go with the original factory butterscotch paint. I always called it baby poop orange. It is rare though and once I started seeing patches of it while disassembling the car I liked it more and more. I actually wanted to paint my car a 1969 color, Q5 seafoam turquoise.  My car was a 318/904 and it will never be that again so the factory original plan goes right down the drain, sorry  :crazy:  400/727 for now and a 500 stroker later as money allows, 4 wheel disc brakes, adding a rally dash from my old 'Cuda, an R/T hood with pins. I most likely will not clone an R/T just because I am not really a fan of the blacked out back panel and grille and IMO the gills make the car look too busy. I will add a wing maybe and I have already put electric life power windows. 2 amps minimum and probably 3 with a nice dolby dts alpine system might find its way into the car as well when money allows. So as you see this will not be stock except for the outward appearance with the white top, original color and such. I had it in my mind to add the non R/T sport stripes because that is what I thought came on the car orginally and I might still add them later on.

Did challengers have the blacked out back panel and grill or gills??   :clueless:

71 Challenger R/T's have a black grille, black tail panel and tail light housing and quarter panel gills just behind the doors. Don't get me wrong, if I were lucky enough to find a 71 R/T I would be very happy, I just dont think I like the look enough to clone it. To be quite honest I prefer the 70 'Cuda over the 71 for the same reason. Yeah the 71's do have a look all their own and they are the ones that people seem to prefer but I like the cleaner lines of the 70.
