    I just ran across a car in the local classifieds.....73 Cuda with a 318 and a 3 speed on the COLUMN??

    I guess that I have not heard of a column shift e Body before!

    That's pretty normal. I have 2 cars like that and one is a 340 car!!

    Mine probably would of been on the column if it had been an automatic, but instead I lucked out with a 4 speed!!   :bigsmile:

    If you want to change to a floor shift column they are easy to get on E-bay and usually only go for around $100 to $150

    Is that column shift auto or standard?My 70 GC is column shift auto,now a 4 speed column would be quite rare :bigsmile:

    3 on the tree....I have never owned, heard of one nor seen one....didnt know they existed....

    No, he's talking three on the tree... A manual with an H-pattern on the column shift lever.
    I read an article on that somewhere yesterday.  If I recall correctly, floor shifted three speeds
    were the norm, but the column shift was an option.  I'll see if I can figure out where I found that.

    ...Nope, the article was talking shift options for automatics.  A lot of the A-bodies had column shift
    manuals, usually behind a six cylinder.  If that was original to the car, I'd guess it was a Barracuda base
    model that originally had a six banger..

    My only experience with three on the tree was a friend's car in high school.  I was a gearhead and he was not and one day he stopped by all excited by what he had just bought.  It was a '74 Buick Century (had to look up the year, round headlights), with bright red paint and a white vinyl top.  An inch of filler in the rear quarters, rear end jacked up six inches with some big tires on some cheap aftermarket universal wheels, don't remember the engine, but remember that column mount shifter.  I asked him if he stole the car from somebody's grandma.   :roflsmiley:

    A friend of mine in high school had a Maverick with 3 on the tree. What a weird feeling driving that thing  :crazy:

    I have seen lots of column shift AAR Cudas, a few Superbirds and some T/As as well. Pretty cool!

    One T/A is a real oddball, column shift, bench seat, radio delete yet it is coded as a dealer demonstrator. Very odd and very cool.  :thumbsup:

    I'm still not sure who was talking manual or automatic in this thread.  The original
    poster was talking column shift MANUAL 3-spd behind a 318 in an E-body.  Barry,
    were you talking about AARs and T/As with column shift manuals?  Sounds strange
    to me.  I tried searching for a reference, only found that three on the tree was common
    behind six cylinders and some 318 models through the late sixties, but couldn't find
    any reference to them in E-bodies, can you clarify any?

    To me, column shift is an automatic and three on the tree is a manual.

    Three on the tree was available on A and B bodies for sure, but I have never seen one on an E body. I know for sure that it was not available in 1970, but I do not know about later years?

    Everybody was talking column shift automatic and then he mentioned that he really was asking about three on the tree and still everybody kept talking automatic...   :dunno:

    I guess if it really is three on a tree behind a 318 in a Barracuda, then the answer to the question is yes, that is rare if it's original, or somebody is just really confused.
