Cuda Hemi Fender lip stamping/ Anybody got the skinny?
« on: October 07, 2006 - 12:34:05 AM »
I have been away for a while ! Finally found my way back !
I need you guys to give me the skinny on the Hemi fender mystery. My car has cuts/stamps and the lips are rolled under. It is in the body shop now and I am trying to find pictures of the Hemi Fender lip, to make sure mine are really factory.
At first I thought someone did it, but the thin cuts look like only a big machine could have made them. They are perfect thin slices of metal that were removed.
Any help would be greatly appreciated !
I will post pictures of the fender lip this tuesday when I go back by the shop to visit my car. I miss it already.....
Here are pictures of my Car right before it left for the body shop.

I think the AAR was the only one that had the fender lip roller over.  Sounds like a great car!!   :worshippy

Barry out of curiosity what would the rolled lip be for and who would really care unless they were trying to authenticate an AAR or Ta,but as you said most didnt come with them so thats a moot point.I dont see what the big deal is but thats me

Supposedly it was for tire clearance on hard braking, my original T/A fenders did not have rolled lips and I never had a problem with tire clearance even in hard stops.

So, I agree, it is no big deal.

T/Ake care,
Barry

Well, I am still hunting for that definite answer? I am replacing one of my fenders, so I have three rolled lips and one replacement thats not rolled. Everytime I go to an event and see E-bodies they never have the rolled lips.
I spoke w/one guy on the phone and he said that they were done only if guy who ran the machine was not needed anywhere else. It was a low priority part of the build and that it usually was not done.

I am goint to have my body guy roll the replacement fender to match the others and call it a day. I will post pics soon though just we all know that we are talking about the same thing.

Thanks for the info, and for the help

I've owned two AARs, one with and one without the rolled fender lips.  The one that did not have rolled fenders had a problem with tire clearance.  With the wheel turned all the way, the tire would rub on the fender.  Not sure if the steering box makes a difference, but it had the quick ratio TA box.  The tires were properly sized and the suspension was not sagging, so those are out of the equation.

Hey Jeff
Thanks for your response!
Do you have any pictures of what the rolled lip looked like. I have my car in the shop and I am trying to make sure that mine are correct.
I will tryo to remember to take pics of mine and post them as well

Sorry, no pics.

To add more intrigue, cars with Hemi fenders were also available with lip moldings.  Those got rolled also.  There's a well known Hemi car collector in town who lets me rummage through his yard full of cars.  He's got a Hemicuda with the rolled ender lips and rolled moldings.  It looks like it was done by hand on the floor.  They ground a groove through the center of the molding, then folded the remaining inner part up and left the exposed part alone.  The broadcast sheet does verify the molding was there when the car left the factory.

I recently photographed an original paint, super low mile original, wheel lip molding equipped 71 Hemi Cuda (January 15, 1971 Hamtramck car) . It had rolled fender lips, a "Hemi Fender" fender tag, and normal uncrimped or trimmed wheel lip moldings.

Hemi fenders were not available until mid-January.  'Cuda fenders did not have mid braces, Challengers did.  Brake size had nothing to do with the fenders as 14" wheels accommodated all brake sizes.

So if I put 15x7' Rallys on my `Cuda up front, will I have tire clearance problems as well?  :clueless:

What did AAR have as rims 15x6'? Can you still put a wheel lip molding on it?
