polishing original windshield?
« on: October 11, 2006 - 11:31:14 PM »
I have the original windshield from my challenger in my garage. It has scratches and small sand blasting pits from being in the windy desert its whole life. I heard recently about polishing old glass and making it like new again. Is this possible? What do I use as a polishing compound? I know that the original glass is much thicker than the replacement I bought 10 years or so ago. Thanks for any information

Eastwood sells a kit, but I have no personal experience using it, I;ve heard of people using tooth paste on glasses, but again never tried it.

BB,

I bought the Eastwood kit but I haven't used it yet.  I should be at that point in a week or two.

Polishing scratches out of glass is Totally possible, the problem lies in the fact that the glass distorts,or ends up with a MAJOR ripple
where the repair has been made.  This is why you really don't hear about "fixing scratches" on glass.

New windshields and still available,i bought one from a glass shop last year for a 120 bucks for my 70 GC,you would be better off buying a new one instead of paying however much the eastwood kit costs(and I'm sure its not cheap) and wasting your time

That is the battle I am having now.  I have the Eastwood kit but do I want to go thru the hassle when my time can be spend better on other things.  I spoke with RichardT, a member here who has a replacement glass company.  His prices were very good on windshields. I was also considering the door glass as mine is all scratched up from old dryed out weatherstrip. I guess when I get to that point I will make a final decision.

I dont know if the glass has gotten any better since I bought a windshield for my Challenger back in 94 but the reason I am even contemplating polishing the original is because of the thickness of the glass itself. The original seems almost twice as thick as the replacement glass. I have a good windshield and we got it cut out recently with no problems preparing for paint but I am starting to gather parts for my hunka junka 70 plum challenger build. Here are a couple of pics of the hunka junka 70 Challenger.

I dont know how it could be twice as thick but maybe i am wrong BUT all windshields have to meet DOT(department of transportation requirements)for safety.Maybe then are tempered better ???

I agree posishing can be done but creates ripples in the surface which will distort the view
better to buy a new one

I had my original rear glass professionally polished on a machine and even it came out looking like a kaleidoscope and would NOT polish glass.  This was done before you could buy new date coded glass and doing it again, that's what I would do and still may end up doing...  Either live with it (maybe trying the toothpaste approach) or replace it would be my recommendation.

Chunk that old heavy windshield and get you a nice new clear one. If that old windshield hasn't started de-laminating now, it soon will. I've heard nothing but horror stories about guys buying those polishing kits.
