How much is my 74 worth?
« on: October 16, 2006 - 11:13:32 AM »
I recently had this on ebay. I don't understand why it didn't even get a bid. Am I out of the ballpark with price? On one hand, I do want to relist it but not sure where to start, on the other, I'm not in the financial position to give it away for nothing. Any help would be appreciated.
This poll will be up for 3 days.

It all depends on who is looking at the moment.

:iagree: With ebay it only take 2 people that want a pretzel shaped like Jesus to drive it up to $1000, if you know what I mean.

The interior looks decent and you have lots of new parts which is a plus.

Relist it again and go with a price that you feel comfortable with, especially if finances are an issue.  Maybe there'll be someone "fishn4challenger".

Looks like a decent driver, but 74 and I'd think its mudded, so hard to say how much it needs really.  Myself I wouldn't be happy unless I redid the whole car... so value to me isn't more than one needing redone... but lots can't do the work and that'd be a good starting point for them.  Honestly I don't think its worth the starting bid.

Fishn4Cuda, I'd say with it being a '74 and having a 318 kept most viewers from bidding on it.  I know if it was originally an A57 coded 360 Rallye car, you probably could have gotten at least one bid.  The car looks pretty clean for a restoration candidate, but I'd say the current market value for a restorable 318 '72-'74 Challenger is within the $4,000-$5,000.00 range.  The thing your car has going for it is that it's all one color, as opposed to say part primer/part original paint, as well as the quarters and rocker panels need some minor rust repair work.  If you asked me the same question four years ago when I bought my '73, I'd say the maximum for a non-340/360 is $2,500.00, but prices have obviously been driven up these past few years.  Another problem I think people had was that you can buy a nicely restored '72-'74 318 Challenger for around $12,500-$15,000.00, so the starting bid was a little intimidating for most.  I'd say just give it some time away from eBay, then list it when there aren't as many '74s being listed, not to mention try a lower starting bid of like $4,000 or so. (hopefully you won't be losing any money with that starting bid.)  This way, you're better set in the potential market for anyone either looking for a Challenger in general or if someone wants to relive their youth of owning a '74 model. :2thumbs:  Best of luck with whatever you decide to do.

The starting bid might be a bit steep. I know it's risky, but sometimes if you start low, it draws more attention(bidding). You could always put a reserve on it to save yourself too.

LOL.  Let me know when he/ she registers. You made my day Super Blue 72.
I am taking all of your responses seriously and see your points. I've been so wrapped up in 70-71 cars in the last 10 yrs, I didn't realize I was out pricing myself in the 72-74 market. I will continue to listen (read) and try again in the future. Keep up the suggestions and or ideas.
Thanks,
Fishn

I understand your dilemma. It seems the market for the 72-74 Cuda's has taken off, but the later year Challengers aren't near that yet.  >:(

I have even collected rust free R & L Ralley fenders, rakes, ralley dash, and go-wing for this car. I didn't include them in the auction because I didn't feel those parts would increase value that much. I really love driving this car and it hurts to have to sell her now, just to put the cash into a car I really didn't want (70 Cuda Conv). But that was my bad investment.

I think the parts would definetly help, not everyone will factor it in, but the less ya got to buy after the initial purchase is a big factor.

Looking at the car, it's a great place to start. But, as a starting point, there is significant rust visible in the rockers. That's common, but can be a Pandora's box. As a 318 car, it makes the initial cost the only way to try to keep from spending too much to get a nice result when it's done. The bodywork alone, done by a typical body shop (not resto, but a normal shop) if they take it would be well over 7K(I'd price 8-9 after materials) for rust repair and refinishing. If the end result is a car valued at $15K on the high side, spending  5 to buy it and not knowing about the rest of the parts gets me nervous. IMO, no year hHallenger is undersirable. But 72-74 are less desirable, and as a JH car, it's the lower end of the spectrum. Very nice car. I would pay $4K tomorrow for it. I'd suggest relisting, with a start price of $3K, and a reserve you can live with. Mention having the parts, but they are not included in the auction. Then a cheapscate bidder can worry about finding them, and a better off guy knows the parts are an easy score. I think on Ebag you will get over 7 for it, but you'll have to watch the bidding go on for a little while first.

Here in Arizona, the rusty cars don't go for much...  I think you could get $3000 for sale here locally.
