Challenger Doors.
« on: October 16, 2006 - 01:35:54 PM »
Are there any differences between a 1971 Challenger door and a 1974 Challenger door?  Thanks.

yes , the wil phisically fit Bit there are a few minor differences in the hardware used & the side beam is heavier in the later doors

What are the differences.  I have a 71 door (original to my car) that needs rust repair.  I also have a rust free 74 door.  I am trying to decide if the differences are enough to merit fixing the 71 door.  Thanks for your help Chryco.

I'm sorry I can't be of more help, but I just recall some difference in the weather stripping of the door panels. The 70-71's had them slipped on, while the later years had them screwed on. I see no reason for you not to use the later year door. That was the only difference I noticed.  :dunno:

IMHO, just use the clean door , who can tell once they are installed on the car and reassembled? (save money to boot)

I know there are some slight differences if only in the weight of the side beam etc , I believe some of the window hardware changed slightly , I was hoping someone else would jump in with some specifics as well

I had a 73 door that I got a tinted window out of for my 71 and there are definitely differences in the glass hardware. The glass fuzzies are different and bolt up to different points if I remember right. I did not know the beam was heavier but I do know that it is one heavy sob to throw on your shoulder and carry  :eek4: I ended up trading it for a 70 door. I would not think the differences would be enough to go with a rotted out one but since my original door only has a small rust spot where the drain hole was plugged with sand I am going to repare it anyway.

The 70 door is the odd ball 71-74 the shell is basically the same, 71 started the screwed on weatherstrips (window fuzzies) the glass changed in 72, the regulator & guides also changed in 72, 71 & up has the door latch that allows you to lock the door from the inside while the door is open, can't do that on a 70...Use the 73 door but use all the parts from the 71 door.. :2cents:

Thanks for the information.  I didn't realize there were so many differences.  I am going to have to lay them out side by side and decide what to do. I have to use the 71 glass due to the fact it is for my convertible.  It might be easier to fix the 71 door so I know everything will fit.
