Where do I stick my probe?

...my temp gage probe that is! I am switching to an aftermarket temp gage after overheating at the track friday night when the factory gage was reading right in the middle.I figure the gage is off or was stuck but the problem is the probe for the aftermarket gage is too large in diameter and too long to fit the bung where the stock one was.Where do you guys mount yours?Do I need some typr of adapter for the intake or is there somewhere else to mount it?

I'm sorry I can't answer your question, but have you thought about replacing the original temp. sending unit? They are pretty cheap, and that might be all you need.  :dunno:

big blocks have a plug in the top of the housing near the heater hose tubes
 small block would need to be tapped into the intake manifold

I figure I already have the Autogage unit lying around and once I verify it is accurate by using a meat thermometer I will have a nice gage with actual temp increment readings which the stock one doesn`t have.

It`s a small block.So where is the best place to tap it,right thru the original hole or somewhere else.The intake is coming off anyway to fix a minor gasket leak so it will be no problem to drill it anywhere.

I'm assuming that you're using a mechanical gauge.  I had the same dilemma!  :banghead:

I used an electric temp gauge and used the factory sending unit.
1972 Dodge Challenger Rallye 340, AT, Code TB3=Super Blue, SBD=8/17/1971.  Yes, a Rallye without the fender louvers from the factory because of the body side molding option.

I tapped a second hole right next to the factory sending unit.

I had a bung placed in the top tank of the radiator .

I used the electric unit instead of the mechanical oneto fix that problem.  Otherwise it requires drilling and tapping of the intake.  The drill bits were $50!

I just got a few brass fittings at lowes and plumbed my mech temp gauge in my dusters heater lines...

I did not get a chance to take a pic last night.

Here are a couple of that I have on my computer.

You can see the sendign unit in the from pass side corner of the intake.  It is the one with the think black line coming from it.

Yes it sticks out of the intake abit, but it works.

I ended up drilling out the factory hole to a larger size as the sensor would not fit into the stock hole and making up an adpater to mount it.It turned out good so I`ll get some pics this weekend.

I might check that out as some times I get some feedback from the alternator or something and the temp goes up when the RPMs go up!
