Oil -Where's the Zinc and phorporus ? Herb says ...
« on: October 16, 2006 - 09:18:37 PM »
???   Mopar  man Herb McCandless gave a talk at the show in Millington tn. 10- 14 -06 ,He has some great info! He said the zinc and phorporus has been removed from most oils ,in newer engines {roller lifters} it does not matter BUT in older flat tappet lifter engines it wears your cam lobes and lifters  OUT the zinc and phorprus protects the surfaces and helps the lifter rotate as it should . How many cams have you heard of going down shortly after breakin ?Even after  breakin being peformed correctly and parts matched.A friend had two go down Herb said it was the oil .Old motor and cam was fine had zinc and phor. Could be right ! The ONLY two oils with zinc and phor. is Valoline premium blue and Shell Rotella T made for Cummins eng. . He said it works fine in older gas engines! Use Baldwin filters he says are the best! Not found at Wally World!     :scared:

Do a google search on ZDDP...The epa ordered it removed from engine oil due to it causing catalytic convertors to fail, it isn't needed by modern roller lifter equipt engines as there is no high pressure sliding contact points...the best currently avalible source for ZDDP is a GM product called EOS (engine oil suppliment) & the best deal I've found is here...     http://www.sdpc2000.com/catalog/1016/products/584/GM-Engine-Oil-Suppliment-EOS-16oz-Bottle-.htm
BTW California dealers have removed this product from their shelves, it may not be avalible for long...

I use REDLINE 10w-30 in the Challenger.

Good News: High in Zinc, Phorporus, and Moly

Bad News: $8.00 per qt. + Filter + Shipping = about $55.00 each oil change.

Good thing I only have to change it once a year.

I have a seven-page analysis, which tested over 100 current or new oils last year.  It compares the ingredients of each oil in parts per million.  I saved it to my computer, but the website now requires a dealer to register for access.  I am willing to show it on here, but due to the size (almost 1 meg.), I do not think the Administrators would let is stay up.

For now at least. Someone told me they will be changing the formula for that oil too.  :pullinghair:  I'm ready to start stock piling it.  :grinyes:

Hughes Engines has a one page write-up on this situation.  I guess lots of cams were getting wiped out.  There are a bunch of posts on this board about this too if you can find them in a search.  A few different variety of additives are available for improving the oil for engines with flat tappet cams.  My local engine builder recommended Federal Mogul Assembly Lube.
