It's truly sad to see a car that rare return to nature such as that one has.  Beep Beep Dave, don't take any personal offense on these remarks.  We just know how dimented things have gotten when the word Hemi is spoken and that car's sale price is definitely outside the box by like $20 G's.  It'd be amazing (downright impressive) if someone flung the cash for a complete rebuild on that car, but I think it's going to be sitting as a yard ornament for quite some time.  You had an interesting point with keeping it as is, but most people buy these cars to enjoy them once again as they were intended to do back in the '70s. :thumbsup: :cheers:

Barrelcuda :roflsmiley:  A roof and a firewall... and its being saved, but its already for sell.  Just like this gtx, sometimes a cars too far gone to save, they all can't be saved.  But as we see, the vins can!

I think is very good to talk about these cars, I welcome hearing other peoples views. Unfortunately to me, rebodies have been part of the hobby for along time...I can remember hearing about guys grabbing southern shells in the early 1980's in Southern Ontario and switching VIN's over, luckily back then everyone wasn't educated in the other differences between cars so they were easy to spot. Nowadays you'd have to be pretty clever to spot a well done rebody. I am not absolutely positive I could. I usually view each and every car with some scepticism. And that sucks :pullinghair:

If I was buying a high dollar car I'd prefer an untouched original over a fresh resto just for those reasons.


If I had the space and the $$$ I'd buy up a few of these type cars and put them on display as is...this car from Carlisle got me started:

It doesn't look too bad in the pics but it was "run hard and put away wet" it was really rough, to me to far gone to fix but too cool to scrap! I would love to see it inside on display...it would make quite the conversation piece parked say beside your mint T/A Challenger or whatever.

Thats what makes it all that much more interesting...I think it would be great to somehow track this car over the years to come, see what decisions were made, and what became of it....

When the price comes down to what the market will bear; someone, somewhere will most likely rebody the car.

This is an example of why doing your homework before buying a vehicle would definately pay off... and why people like Barry and others who pay attention to this stuff and keep track of VIN and such are so valuable to the car community.  :2thumbs:

Someone should start www.rebodiedregistry.com and start keeping track of known rebodies and misrepresented cars... I would "donate" to it..  :jumping:

I don`t consider too many cars too far gone to save,espsecially rare ones, but that car should be scrappd along with the vin tag.Sure it would be cool to save it as is but we all know if someones pays $25,000 or even close to that chances are the car would be rebodied for profit and that is not cool for the hobby.I doubt it would matter to the seller what the buyers intentions were as long as they stuck a lot of cash in front of him-again sad for us car guys who appreciate muscle cars for what they are not how much they are worth.  my 2 cents

On many restored cars the radiator supports that are damaged may get replaced but the VIN is saved, then replace the quarters, complete floor pans, trunk pans, frame rails, firewalls, fenders, inner fenders, roof skins, door jams, etc, etc, etc, so if you do it all to one car, at what point will it not be the original car? If you replace everything on the car and keep the correct vin stamps in the correct locations, is it, or is it not the same car and correct if built as original? Lets face it, none of the extremely rusted or damaged restos are original. Not original in many ways even though they look and are correct. Just my  :2cents:

ive come up with an answer to make 25k  cut the car up in 25,000 pices and sell them all for 1.54 

1.00 for the piece of metal
.39 for a 1st class us postage
.05 for an envelope and
.10 for a printed certificate of autenticity, with the vin number

im sure a lot of people would pay less that 2.00 for a pice of hemi history

Actually I wouldn't mind a resto car but it all depends on the price range. Dave, I think the problem with your friend's Hemi basketcase is, that aside from maybe a vin and fender tag there isn't much left in store aside from a complete body swap. Not saying it isn't completely out of the question for a resto or that no one would want it, heck if I had the time and really loved the car I would take it. However not for that price! It is WAY out in left field.

That car should go to someone that had one in their past, couldn't or can't live without one, have the vision to see that gem in the rough and have the tenacity to make it happen. One word....... Mopar
