How do I change the Shift Indicator Light ?
« on: October 19, 2006 - 11:53:49 AM »
The light in the console that lights up my the shift indicators must have burned out. What is the easiest way of changing this other than using a flashlight now ???

Should be able to just remove the top plate and get to it there.  :clueless:

It's been a while, but I think you have to take the console out. It(the light) just fits up underneath the shifter. It's a cheap cheesy socket on the end of an orange wire, so be careful. The socket also needs to make good contact as that's were it gets it's ground connection.

I'm pretty sure you have to do what MEKrunner suggested.  It should be up underneath the shifter assembly as he said.  It may be possible to get to with just the top plate off, but that may be too small of an area to get access to the light bulb.

Just looked at my car in the garage 'cause the console's in the basement and - yep, I don't see any other way to get to it other than removing the console itself. Oh, and it does plug in underneath the shifter.

Wow - This sounds like major operation just to change a light bulb. Thanks, Guys.

Actually it's not.

The big trouble I had was aligning the console to screw it back in place.  :pullinghair:

Thanks - All done. After removing the cover plate and T handle, I was able to remove the three bolts that holds the shifter plate down. Removed the one in the back and then put it in 1st gear and removed the front two. At that point the shifter plate lifted right out and simply changed the bulb and put it all back together - 15 minute job. I had forgotten that the indicator shows a different color as it goes through the gears. Like wow man - Cool.

The orange bulb wire plugs in behind the right side kick panel. That harness goes to a triple orange plug above the radio area.
